Its 00.30 and my doorbell just rang

I'm really freaked out! I live in australia so it's half past midnight and just as I was dropping off to sleep our doorbell rang. Dh is still at work and i thought it was him having forgot his key so went down and looked through the spy hole and nothing was there. Checked the door was locked and it is. It's really scared me. Can doorbells just ring on their own? Its an electric one that does ding dong, not a brrrrrring bell one - can you tell I'm not a doorbell expert?!

While i was away a few weeks ago dh said this happened once at night and no one was there.

So either a dodgy doorbell or someone's messing with us. Aaaaargh.

If it is a wireless one, yes, they can ring on their own.
If our doorbell was rung, it didn't ring but my neighbour's across the road did Grin. We changed ours as it was driving her nuts.

I have an electric doorbell that chimes as the power comes back on if there's been power cut, even if it's only gone off for seconds.

Optimist1 · 05/12/2018 13:51

My old wireless doorbell used to chime when one of my neighbours walked close to my front door - turns out his mobile sent some sort of signal to it that made it ring. Thankfully the chime was different from the one it made when someone was actually pressing the bell, and my neighbour didn't walk by at antisocial hours.

Ok when i'm brave enough and dh is here I'll check what sort of set up we have. We rent so I'm not sure what's installed. It's in a complex of houses off the main entrance so people don't just walk by unless it's a neighbour.

Pretty sure we didn't have a power cut but that's a good thought

Every noise i hear is now an intruder coming in!

I'd give up on sleep, turn all the lights on and watch TV for a bit if I were you. Just until you've calmed down enough to sleep.

moonlight1705 · 05/12/2018 13:57

Mine rings if you vacuum anywhere near to it so obviously something is interfering with the signal.

PFB1 · 05/12/2018 13:58

This may not be the case for you but sometimes just as I'm dropping off to sleep, a loud noise will jolt me back. I think they happen as part of/the beginning of a dream. I've had loud bangs, doorbells etc. As I said it may not be this but this has definitely happened to me. Used to really freak me out but I'm sort of used to it now.

PFB1 · 05/12/2018 14:01

It's called exploding head syndrome and isn't really that uncommon.

justasyouare · 05/12/2018 14:05

Ours rings on it’s own, also a wireless one. Sorry it has freaked you out Flowers

safariboot · 05/12/2018 14:19

My thought is kids playing knock-and-run.

mollycoddlethem · 05/12/2018 14:24

I stayed in a holiday cottage where the doorbell kept doing this.
Apparently it was when people clicked the central locking on their car outside. It interfered with the radio waves?
Also you can be on the same frequency as a neighbour I think so yours rings when theirs does.
You can change the frequency on them.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 05/12/2018 14:25

Fuck that I've seen Wolf creek lol

BrieAndChilli · 05/12/2018 14:50

ours used to ring (and change the ringtone has it was the sort with lots of different ones) whenever a taxi went past, something to do with thier radio signal.

obviously if you live in the arse end of nowhere than i'd be a little bit worried but if you live near other people and roads etc i would suspect its something to do with that.

maybe turn the ring to quiet at night?

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 05/12/2018 14:52

Ours used to ring when DH did a particularly loud sneeze!

BifsWif · 05/12/2018 14:56

Ours used to ring in heavy wind and rain - how’s the weather?

readyplayer · 05/12/2018 15:10

Fuck that.

This stuff gives me the proper willies.

Pinkyponkcustard · 05/12/2018 17:14

Thing is an intruder wouldn’t ring the doorbell would they? Sounds like a dodgy doorbell
