Umbrella Pathway - autism assessment process

Middle DS (6) was referred to the Umbrella Pathway (autism assessment process) via school/Educational Psychologist at the end of last year. So far he has only seen a clinical psychologist and next week he has an appointment with the paediatrics team to discuss his neuro-developmental history...…

I'm after a bit of advice as so far he has been oblivious to the whole process but I really need to explain to him somehow what the appointment is for, especially as I need to take him out of school early. Also, does anyone know what I can actually expect to happen at this particular appointment, as I'm not sure what "checking his neuro-development history" actually entails? Thanks for reading.

When mine went through it we were questioned on milestones from birth, babbling, speech, how he played/interacted with his peers, ability to cope with situations etc. He then had to do lots of 'fun' type playing games with the paed. Unfortunately or fortunately he flatly refused to take part in most of it stating he was far too exhausted after 10 minutes to continue.

Thank you for replying - it seems like we have already done that with various different people already but I understand a variety of professionals have to observe him. What did you say to him about what the appointment was for?

I said we were going to see some special doctors who can hopefully help with the way you feel and school. I didn't make a big thing of it at all.

Fab, he knows he has trouble calming down once upset, especially at school so I’ll keep it about that. Thanks for your replies.
