Pop Music - Help needed

Hello
Sorry - I just need quick help on this topic.
If you were asked to give icons from each decade who would you go with?
40s
50s
60s
70s Abba
80s Michael Jackson Madonna
90s Madonna
2000s Britney Spears
2010s Lady Gaga Rihanna Katy Perry

Who would you say for earlier decades, do you agree with the above (seems very white female) or who have I excluded and can you think of any icons who changed the face of music that I've missed?

Thanks in advance x Flowers

Elvis was rock n roll, would the Beatles count as pop, where would Cliff fit in?

Beatles and Stones for 60s
I don't think 'pop' as we know it was a thing before the 60s.
What about Blur and Oasis for 90s? And Spice Girls?
Queen?

Chewbecca · 04/12/2018 21:51

Wham & Duran Duran for 80s too

Oh, I just keep thinking of missing folk. U2, Prince, Bowie

Grace212 · 04/12/2018 21:53

Taylor Swift
George Michael
Whitney Houston

Chewbecca · 04/12/2018 21:54

Oh, Elton John.

MadisonAvenue · 04/12/2018 21:54

70s - The Osmonds, Bay City Rollers

MulticolourMophead · 04/12/2018 21:55

Queen isn't pop, is it? Although they are/were an icon.

Pop seems to have it's beginnings in the 50s, the 1940s didn't have much that you's call pop. But I guess Glenn Miller and his band sort of summarises the music, and perhaps Vera Lynn & Gracie Fields.

PuppyMonkey · 04/12/2018 22:00

40s - Glenn Miller/ Sinatra
50s - Elvis/Doris Day
60s - Beatles
70s - Bowie
80s - Michael Jackson
90s - Oasis and Blur

00s - pop music went shit
10s - ditto Grin

PuppyMonkey · 04/12/2018 22:01

Would the Beatles count as pop? Confused are you familiar with the term pop music OP? It means music that is popular. Grin

IndigoSpritz · 04/12/2018 22:02

What Puppy Monkey says.

epicclusterfuck · 04/12/2018 22:11

Beyoncé

MulticolourMophead · 04/12/2018 22:11

I think I'll stick to metal Grin Shame I wasn't quick enough to get Rammstein tickets.

MozzieMagnet · 04/12/2018 22:14

Grin was my original understanding yes, but then wiki gave
"a body of music which is distinguishable from popular, jazz, and folk musics" and I wanted examples which no-one could say went into other genres like soul/funk/indie/heavy rock.
I wasn't sure whether Stones and Beatles were more rock than pop and thought Oasis/Blur were more indie but I forgot the term Britpop. Sadly this is not being done from a British perspective (not in UK).

80s Duran, Duran, Culture Club

50s - Buddy Holly

MozzieMagnet · 04/12/2018 22:25

Thanks for all the suggestions so far x

Brel · 04/12/2018 22:37

Oh it's mostly music in English, apart from Rammstein obviously. Otherwise it would be easier; I would take Brel for the 60's etc...

MozzieMagnet · 04/12/2018 22:44

Next question:

If you had to choose ONE pop song to epitomise pop music, which would you to choose?

diamantegal · 04/12/2018 22:52

But, but - you've missed off Kylie and Jason!

MozzieMagnet · 04/12/2018 22:53

Ne me quitte pas is gorgeous brel
Sadly DD and her friends are heathens. They have not heard of Holiday and I feel ancient!

MozzieMagnet · 04/12/2018 22:56

Ah diamant especially for you... (see what I did there?!)

My favourite is: La chanson des vieux amants

, and then voir un ami pleurer. Well basically almost all of his songs, hence the username (the best ones are those post 1959, when he started doing more serious stuff).

For me it's quite difficult to choose a song that epitomises pop music.

E.g: this song was very popular at one point in time, so ...:

PuppyMonkey · 05/12/2018 07:06

One song to epitomise pop music? Maybe... Thriller or She Loves You.
