So this Christmas we are having a present buying competition with my DB/DS/DBIL/DSIL. The rules are:
Budget - £5ish
Has to be useful in some way
Preferably entertaining, at least in an 'I never even knew I needed that' kind of a way.

I'm thinking something like a cheese slicer, but more esoteric. The competition is based on the crap gadget catalogues that drop through my DP's door on a regular basis, but I can't remember the names of any of them!

Can anyone find something pure genius? My reputation is at stake here...

W did a white elephant swap last year. The gift that was most popular was a light that you stuck inside the toilet that lit up when you lifted the lid. My son was delighted to win it for his student flat.

What you need is a Pom-pom maker, no home should be without one!

Have a look on Amazon for them in your price range, just under five quid.

Heuschrecke · 03/12/2018 16:59

Have a look on Lakeland www.lakeland.co.uk

I think my most ridiculous Lakeland purchase - many years ago - was a plastic lettuce knife (because you're not supposed to cut lettuce with any kind of steel knife). So, yeah, great idea. Until I remembered my Mum telling me that you just tear lettuce with your hands - no need for a knife of any description. Not sure they do it now though!

They've got some nice, inexpensive gadgety things here www.lakeland.co.uk/in-the-kitchen/kitchen-utensils/?sort=price-asc&pageSize=36&q=%3Arelevance# .

How about the fish bone tweezers www.lakeland.co.uk/18361/Lakeland-Fish-Bone-Tweezers?!

I saw a fibre optic light up air freshener in the gym toilets last week
I was fascinated 😉

Hengine · 03/12/2018 17:07

Banana guard? Lakeland do them and they are actually useful!

Aquamarine1029 · 03/12/2018 17:10

A set of stainless steel straws.

Floralnomad · 03/12/2018 17:13

Will second the cherry stoner , don’t know what I’d do without mine . Also a cheap meat thermometer or an elastic band ball .

FadedRed · 03/12/2018 17:17

The amazing avocado gizmo (unless they consider avocado’s are killing the planet).
Available on t’interweb for a few quid.

Lakeland is good for these sort of things:
Avocado slicer:
www.lakeland.co.uk/16511/OXO-Good-Grips-3-in-1-Avocado-Tool
Cake half-er
www.lakeland.co.uk/17747/Adjustable-Wire-Straight-Cake-Slicer
Cupcake corer
www.lakeland.co.uk/16686/Lakeland-Cupcake-Corer

Or are these things too domestic?

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 03/12/2018 17:19

Judas - the head massager looks lovely, but potentially a little bit sensual for giving to rather staid BIL...
