Should I say something ? Work and porn

I am 1 week into a new job. The offices are open 24/7 so I went in today to get something from my office.

Saw the security guard on the way in who opened for me. I suspect he didn’t think i’d be as quick as I was, or maybe he didn’t care, but when I came down he was nowhere to be seen but there was porn playing on the reception computer.

He then appeared (was having a fag out the front) and looked a bit embarrassed and went and sat back down and switched it off.

Not really sure what I should think or do about it?

I’m not against porn, don’t have strong feelings around it - but surely not on a work computer, while at work??

It was just your usual ‘bread and butter’ porn - woman with huge knockers shagging a bloke, not anything particularly kinky or disturbing.

Also I don’t want to be the newbie who within the first week of employment is clutching her pearls about the security guard watching porn.

What do you think?

Just leave it. Who the fuck watches porn at work though?

AdamNichol · 03/12/2018 08:50

I appreciate the being a Guard has to be one of the dullest ways to spend 7hrs a day - however, no porn at work where a) other people can see it, and b) you risk infecting the whole network with whatever malware flows from the host site (and the adverts attached).

TheQueef · 03/12/2018 08:53

Eurgh.
I bet that just added to your feeling of safety and security......

I would mention the porn blocker isn't working but wouldn't report the guard.

dinosaurglitterrepublic · 03/12/2018 08:57

I would mention the porn blocker isn't working but wouldn't report the guard.

If you don’t mention the guard, this might raise a few questions as to how the OP obtained this information! Obviously his behaviour is unacceptable, but I wouldn’t get involved.

TootinBarbs · 03/12/2018 09:03

As a security officer, my opinion is bias. But 100% I'd report it. It should not be happening and no matter how dull or boring it may be (I work 49hrs a week over 6 days, I know dull and boring) it should not be accepted.

CallMeRachel · 03/12/2018 09:04

Unless you're working with vulnerable people/children or in government offices then no I wouldn't report him.

Just don't ever shake his hand Grin

TheWiseWomansFear · 03/12/2018 09:05

How absurd! If he's bored he should watch a film. Not porn.

LegoAdventCalendar · 03/12/2018 09:07

I'd report.

CatcherofDreams · 03/12/2018 09:14

Will he get fired if you report this?

In the circumstances you describe ('normal' porn and the fact that he had the grace to look embarrassed) I wouldn't say anything.

I wouldn't be rushing to sit next to him at the works Christmas party however.

PerspicaciaTick · 03/12/2018 09:21

My company had a policy that people caught watching porn would be immediately escorted from the building, it was treated as gross misconduct. Less, I suspect, because of the content and more because of the risks to the network.
I'm very surprised that your company isn't already blocking access to this sort of content.

TroyKing · 03/12/2018 09:43

Poor bloke!

He switched it off when he saw you'd seen it and for all you know may be embarrassed/worried about getting in trouble and won't ever do it again.

Why not tell him straight that you saw it and if he is going to view that kind of thing he should be discreet or not watch it at work!

It's not about him watching it it's about you or anyone else being in a position to inadvertently glimpse it.

I wouldn't report as it wouldn't bother me in the slightest unless it was distracting him from viewing security footage and was putting safety at risk.

LegoAdventCalendar · 03/12/2018 09:46

Poor bloke?! WTAF?! You're paid to watch the monitors when you're a security guard, not watch porn! Can't go an entire shift without watching that shit, you deserve sacked at the least because you're not doing your fucking job! What a sleazy perv and shit employee. I'd also wonder at an employer who doesn't have this blocked but wouldn't hesitate to report this because he's bunking off the job.

Switcherpoo · 03/12/2018 09:47

I would make a tentative comment about still getting used to the company culture when asked how I'm getting on.

I worked for a major high street brand for a long time. I was shocked by what was deemed acceptable, including male only sales incentives with overseas holidays as prizes. Prolific use of escorts while the boys were away, with the women in the office having to pick up the slack. No woman ever qualified for these incentives, it would ruin the fun. There were also regular 'customer meetings' during work hours that took place at massage parlours.

If someone was caught watching porn in the office, in this environment, I know for sure it would t even raise an eyebrow. Watch and wait. Don't do anything yet, but mention it if you think it's the right thing to do.
