I think in the uk you are entitled to one week of parental leave for every year of your child's life until they are 18, no matter where you work. You don't have to use one week each year though, you can save them up. I have a 1 year old and will probably not take the weeks off until she is in school and I want time off in the summer holidays.

ChikiTOKI isn't correct.

Parents get a maximum of 18 weeks to use up to the child's 18th birthday. A maximum of 4 weeks can be taken in any one year. It has to be taken in whole weeks, is unpaid and has to be agreed with the employer (who can refuse it in school holidays if they want to).

I've taken it. (NHS) Can't remember how much you get, 14 days or something rings a bell. I've taken full days, half days and even in hours. There has to be a genuine reason like hospital appointment, illness, nursery shut due to snow. Never had a problem when requesting it.
