Utility warehouse - friend selling

Hi, I've been approached by my friend and she wants to save me money with utility warehouse. I'm worried it's a scam getting me to sign up for things I don't need under the guise of saving money?

She's a nice person and wouldn't scam me but utility warehouse may be scammy in itself? If that makes sense. Anyone got any experience or advice?

Not a scam. Though rather too cult like for my liking tbh. You can get cheaper utilities, though you can save some further money with the discount club which includes cash back at a number of places.

I just find it weird how they seem to rely so heavily on friends and family for customers.

I know a few people who have had real issues with them and left.

I know a couple who people who I keep I touch with on FB, they don’t know each other but they talk about UW in a really specific way. There posts are quite coded but I know what they are talking about, seems cult like to me!

We didn't find they saved us money as we had someone over to check. Note DH is v savvy on price comparison websites etc and regularly checks what we pay and changes accordingly if needed.

Also we had someone else ask about us changing a few years later and we were told we had to have ALL utilities through them which we didn't want as we have an internet phone and didn't want to change and we were v happy with our broadband provider and our set up with them etc. We found it wasn't worth the hassle.

It tends to save you money if you use them for everything internet/mobile/gas/electric/ cash back card.

You need to to check with your own comparisons though.

We find it good for us and I whenever I check around switching would save like £20 per year across everything at most, some years nothing!

Thanks for the replies. I'll check it out and see!

It’s not a scam - we’ve been with them for about 3 years and our bills haven’t increased in that time. When we switched initially our bills went down slightly. Apparently, if you can find a cheaper deal elsewhere they will always match it (though I haven’t put this to the test).

However, their customer service is APPALLING! I once had a small issue with my gas bill when moving house and because I queried the amount on my bill and refused to pay until they explained how they had calculated it, they cut off my mobile phone for a week! (This is obviously only an issue if you have a phone contract with them). I don’t think they employ enough people in their customer services team.

The other issue with doing Utility Warehouse through a friend is that if you switch supplier, your friend loses the monthly commission tied to your account. I don’t like being involved in a friend’s income in this way.

So overall, I wouldn’t say to avoid - just be aware of the link you are making with your friend.
