Argh!!! Bloody microsoft! Can't pay my rent!

I'm literally living hand to mouth at the moment. Can just about pay my rent and nursery bills due next week if I'm very very careful with food, petrol etc.

A month ago I entered into a free trial for outlook so I could access my work emails at home. My laptop then broke, and my uncle gave me his old one which had outlook installed, so I cancelled the free trial 2 weeks ago. I'm sure I did! I definitely clicked the button, but there was no email to confirm Sad

Just got an email saying they've taken £90 out of my account. Feel like I'm going to have a panic attack. Am a single parent of a 3yo, having to move my dad into our 2 bed next month as I'm too poor to carry on like this. That £90 is literally the difference between us eating or not. Never mind bloody right before Christmas.

I should have checked that I got a confirmation email, I'm so thick.

On hold to the live chat people now - anybody know my chances of a refund? Sad

ring your bank tell them to refund it as it was cancelled. Ive done it a few times they do it straight away.

Blankscreen · 02/12/2018 19:40

I think if you explain I'm sure they'll be able to see I you've used the package and refund you.

We had an issue with DSS and £389 Xbox purchases and they refunded the lot!

MynameisJune · 02/12/2018 19:49

Ring your bank, tell them it was unauthorised as you cancelled it. They’ll refund the money and stop them taking anymore.

ChaseOnTheCase · 02/12/2018 19:54

Just phoned the bank, they said anything to do with subscriptions they won't cancel, even though it's just as a pending transaction atm. They are so unhelpful! Hopefully Microsoft will agree to refund. But bet it'll take at least a week to process?

Had to hang up on the bank lady when she said that so I didn't cry down the phone to her. Still number 5 in line for the live chat thing after half an hour.

What a nightmare :( you have to be super careful with subscriptions I've forgotten before and it's knocked me for six like you! Was only £30 for me but again, it's a week of food for just me!

Hopefully Microsoft will refund you, maybe try and email them too? X

ChaseOnTheCase · 02/12/2018 20:08

Even if they say they have no record of me cancelling the free trial (as I had no email, this is what I'm concerned about), then surely this means that I'd be entitled to a refund anyway within 30 days? Surely purchase means the date of payment, and can't include a free trial?

But if I click confirm cancellation, it just says I will be able to access it until December 2019 and won't be billed again then. Confused

Sorry that happened to you adoggy. I've forgotten with things like NowTv etc and sucked it up as it's only a few quid, but this is so annoying as I know I did press the button to cancel! Plus I literally have no use for it, and there's no way I'll be able to pay my DDs nursery until the following week now. 🤯

Blankscreen Microsoft is Xbox right? Hopefully that means I'll stand a chance.

Even if I do need to wait a week that's better than not getting it back at all.

OP if you explain your situation they should refund you. You would be classed as a "vulnerable customer" and special allowances should be made. This is particularly with financial services businesses which are regulated by the FCA but I would still make the case.

This is long but worth skimming whilst on hold

are you on any benefits esp Housing Benefit? if so talk NOW tomorrow morning to housing officer at council explain problem & ask if you can have "loan" for rent & pay back - CAB may be able to help & may also be able to support you re this Standing Order/direct debit

I have to leave for work at 7.30 and don't finish until 5. Could phone on my lunch break though. Is this even the case for private renting?

MyDcAreMarvel · 02/12/2018 20:19

Yes that link means you can cancel within thirty days regardless.
Have you spoke to them yet?

ChaseOnTheCase · 02/12/2018 20:28

Nope. Says my current position in line is 2. Reading through that FSA thing, thanks. Hoping it won't be too much of an ordeal to get them to agree. And hoping even more that they can just cancel the payment rather than having to refund me 🤞🏽🤞🏽

If you get hb I think it does - you may be able to contact via email please ask - I believe that the idea is to help maintain tenancy - check CAB & Shelter sites tonight

I think 30 days of initial purchase would have been when you entered your card details; at the start of the subscription, even though the first two weeks were free. Are you still within that?

I hope it's all sorted quickly. Microsoft are usually pretty reasonable, and I can't imagine them withholding a refund, especially if you haven't logged in since it was paid for and therefore have had no use of the paid product.

ChaseOnTheCase · 02/12/2018 21:00

No, i think the 30 days free was up yesterday, that's why they've charged me. God, that's probably why they do 30 days free trial isn't it? So they're not legally bound to give refunds. Sad

Was stuck at number 2 for like half an hour so had to refresh, now at number 5.

Glad to hear Microsoft have a history of being reasonable though Thanks

They did it with no quibbles at all. Said I had only turned off automatic billing or something. Gonna have to wait 3-5 days for the refund but better than a kick in the teeth I guess. My daughters nursery are pretty good and probably better to ask them if I can pay a few days late rather than my evil landlord. Thanks everyone for your help Thanks
