A woman who has a son with disabilities has managed to save a substantial sum from her benefits to "enrich his life" - but now has a criminal record for benefit fraud as she didn't declare she had savings.

She now risks losing the money.

She must have made some serious sacrifies in order to try and make like better for her son & it was all for nothing.

Just another case of the law being upheld, in a cruel way! Think you’re only allowed 6k to get full benefits. If she’d of smoked, drank, gambled or shopped her benefits away they'd have nothing to say 🤬

Saving 50k in 6 years in some going though.

I'm a bit puzzled by the reason for saving being to enrich her sons life tbh. She has scrimped and saved for all this time, when she could have been spending her money on her son. Doesn't make much sense to me. When was she planning on using it for him?

It seems horribly unfair. However, there is probably an argument that if you are able to save that amount of money from benefits then you don't need it all and if you have that amount of money in savings why should you be claiming benefits.

The benefits system is there to support those that need it, not to enable people to build up massive levels of savings.

RomaineCalm · 02/12/2018 00:48

@BishBoshBashBop I thought that too. Around £8000/year or nearly £700/month. That's a lot of money to put into savings.

Enriching his life or hoarding his money for herself ? Hmm

That money should have been spent on her son, to pay for decent food, holidays activities, good clothing etc. Not moulding away in her bank (( and it will probably be in her name )) whilst the person who it's meant for goes without !
