When I first started dating my now DH, I sent a single red rose to his place of work on his birthday. He was really embarrassed, which wasn't helped by the fact the shortened version of my name, which I wrote on the card, is also a man's name (think Sam, Charlie), and he took some stick for that.

When we moved in together I made a big fuss of his next birthday; organised a lovely breakfast in bed, champagne, orange juice, smoked salmon, red rose, the works. To surprise him I said "As it's your birthday I'll make you a cup of tea", raced downstairs, prepared everything, presented him with it on a tray and his response; "Actually I don't really like champagne". I was so deflated, I stayed in bed and drank the whole bottle myself. That was my last romantic gesture, and that was 33 years ago!

Depends on the situation. Lots of people sent my Dad flowers when he was ill but nobody would think of sending him flowers on his birthday. OH would laugh if I gave him flowers.

Making him laugh sounds like a good reason to give some rather than not
