Obviously it’s all down to personal taste but some things are just wrong...

Mushy peas fgs, noooooooo

What foods would never have a place on your plate?

We could not have a roast dinner without proper marrowfat peas - its very much the tradition in our family from my grandparents down and I can't imagine it without them. The proper ones steeped the night before with bread soda and then slow cooked the next day.

I cannot imagine tinned sweetcorn or indeed any sweetcorn on a roast dinner!

cjt110 · 04/12/2018 12:19

My Dad's family would sit down with a pickle try - branston, picallili, pickled onions and gherkins to dress their dinner. Also a loaf of bread each too.

cjt110 · 04/12/2018 12:24

I think I win the thread.... Grin

formerbabe · 04/12/2018 12:34

Really? A loaf of bread each?! ShockConfused Did they burst?!

BarbaraofSevillle · 04/12/2018 12:36

BIL has gherkins and pickled onions with his Christmas Dinner. I've only had 2 Christmas Dinners with him and one of those I discovered the pickle thing and another, where we hosted, I didn't offer pickles, because it never occurred to me and he repaid me by eating all the roast potatoes (he eats no other veg).

I cooked more roast potatoes than you would ever think possible and I think he had about 20. I didn't realise until I looked and there were no leftover potatoes Shock. I think he just kept eating them until there were no more.

cjt110 · 04/12/2018 13:35

formerbabe I think they are still living and breathing.... But that was standard with ANY meal at their house.

Bittermints · 04/12/2018 15:20

You surely don't mean he left no roast potatoes for anyone else, Barbara? I think I'd have to swing for anybody that deprived me of my roast potatoes at Christmas.

safariboot · 04/12/2018 15:26

All the anti-Bisto people are pretentious and can bugger right off.

Bittermints · 04/12/2018 15:40

I do as my Mum has always done and for gravymaking I use Bisto powder, which is just cornflour with caramel colouring and salt. I tried instant granules once (not sure if they were Bisto or own brand) and found the gravy a bit greasy.

Thirtyrock39 · 04/12/2018 15:47

Yorkshire puddings don't go with turkey
Potatoes should only be roasted
Any other sauces other than gravy cranberry or bread sauce should be banned (we don't even have bread sauce but know it's traditional)
Any other veg than Brussels parsnips carrots and cabbage
Peas and broccoli are not Xmas day food !

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 04/12/2018 15:49

mash potato. Any mashed food actually. I don't want pre chewed food on my dinner thanks.

lynsey91 · 04/12/2018 16:10

Of course yorkshire puddings go with turkey

Merrychristmasyoufilthyanimals · 04/12/2018 16:17

Well i have no choice but to do two kinds of potatoes (roast and mash)
and yorkshire puddings as We have DSS this year and he is an incredibly fussy eater as in he wont eat any veg at all so he would just be have turkey and gravy otherwise.

anniehm · 04/12/2018 16:17

I cook a selection to cover all tastes but no, not mushy peas - the only shortcut veg I do is frozen garden peas, everything else is fresh (just having a break from writing shopping list!)

choli · 04/12/2018 16:57

My, people are very rigid about their Christmas dinner! We have whatever we like for Christmas dinner. New favorites, old favorites. We like to just have a really nice meal without making it into a high pressure cooking marathon.

HeronLanyon · 05/12/2018 06:14

choli that did make me laugh. Sounds as though you are unaware of Christmas dinner traditions ?

sashh · 05/12/2018 06:34

Because half my family prefer mashed and half prefer roast potatoes! We don't do sprouts because nobody likes them. Tradition has it's place but I'd rather prepare and cook a Christmas meal that everyone enjoys!

Wasn't that the plot for a friends episode? Monica making 6 different kinds of potato?

I don't do Xmas so I'm going for a doesn't belong on a roast.

Tomato ketchup (a relative of mine has it on everything inc Xmas dinner).

Typical roast for me, roast meat obviously, roast potatoes AND mash. Yorkshire puddings. Mashed carrot and turnip (yes I mean swede) if I'm feeling well mashed with cream and crispy bacon, sprouts in season, roast parsnips, steamed broccoli and cauliflower.

This is finished off with gravy and mint sauce, if the meat isn't lamb then it just goes on the roast potatoes.

TheDustbunny · 06/12/2018 10:46

I love cauliflower cheese with mine(with turkey, pork or ham) and I'm not ashamed! We usually have two types of meats too.

What you will never find on my table after Christmas dinner is fruitcake or Christmas pudding. They're revolting.

heidipi · 07/12/2018 09:10

Yorkshire pudding: it can be eaten with jam, therefore it can be eaten with turkey. The end.

heidipi · 25/12/2018 20:04

Just resurrecting this thread wot I killed to confirm that peach halves with cranberry were enjoyed, there were no demands for baked beans but DD1 did cry when I wouldn't let her have cereal half an hr before Xmas lunch.

Foods that DO NOT belong on a Christmas Dinner...
bumblebee39 · 25/12/2018 20:10

Any green vegetables that aren't sprouts or at a stretch peas

Plenty of opportunities to eat asparagus, broccoli and kale throughout the year but they are not for Christmas

Tomatoes of any kind why?

GoldenSyrupLion · 25/12/2018 20:13

Prawns. FFS.

snowone · 25/12/2018 20:22

Now I literally love Yorkshire puddings - and on any other roast they are the highlight BUT they just do not belong on a Christmas dinner!! Sorry Grin

SoftSheen · 25/12/2018 20:27

My parents always insist on pickled walnuts. I have never understood this.

DS (3) rejected most of Christmas lunch (except the sausages) and instead ate 5 slices of melon.

MistyMeena · 25/12/2018 20:30

Baked beans. 🙄
