How much would you want to save for...

A trip to New York?

Planning for February 2020, so can buy flights early and not travelling at a peak time. Need a central but not luxury hotel, maybe 5 nights, and happy to walk and use public transport a lot.

I want to start saving now but have no idea how much I might need!

Could probably get a hotel for just under £200 a night. Flights for around £600 and maybe 1k spends would suffice. So 3k should be plenty. Hotel prices don't vary much between 1 and 2 people so if there is 2 of you it would only be extra flights and spends

Depends if you’re going for 3 or 5 nights.
I’d budget £1k pp for travel/hotel, you can get some good deals so should be able to do that.
Then depends on what you want to do and how much you want to shop.
£1k should be fine but £2k would be better.

Depends when you're going too - flight costs can very wildly. I'd budget £400-500 pp for flights (but I would be tracking and seeing what they cost when - you've got time to work out when would be the best time to book). BA does some cracking fly and stay deals, so would probs be cheaper to do that. Hotels in NYC are ruinously expensive - we're currently looking for 4 nights over Easter (didn't do a fly stay for a long and boring reason, largely coming down to getting a flight deal for less than £250pp), and I'm struggling to find much for less than £200-250 a night (but that's with certain parameters).

Eating also expensive, but again, you can spend as much or as little as you like food wise.

Finally, you can do a load of budgeting, but if the exchange rate changes drastically (which it could do once we know what's happening with Brexit - it's very bad at the moment), it could change things substantially (hopefully for the better...).

Thanks all. I had been thinking around 2k so good to see I'm not wildly off the mark. Thanks for the tip on fly and stay!

We're now foodies and will happily grab lunch on the go so not expecting too much in terms of spending once there.
