What's wrong with my finger (pics)

I had what I thought was a papercut, then, after a few days, it got very red and hard and a scab formed.
It's gone down a bit but still is really sore if it's knocked.
It looked like you could burst it but it is hard instead of being squishy.

Can't see a picture. Could it be a whitlow.

Cocolepew · 30/11/2018 19:58

Had a google , its not as bad as the photos, I have had a pretty bad coldsore though. Its definitely not spread just got very raised.

Looks infected?

Cocolepew · 30/11/2018 20:07

That's what I wondered macncheese.
I did get scrabbed by a pupil, but at the time didn't realise I might have a cut, I think this is where it might have came from.
I was injured in another way so didn't pay much attention to my hands.
Maybe her nails might have been dirty.

Looks infected. See the pharmacist - they might be able to let you have some antibiotic cream (but I'm not sure).
You'll probably need to see your GP.
Use warm water salt soaks in the meantime.

Cocolepew · 30/11/2018 20:11

Thanks, it is better than it was. I was using tea tree cream and then sudacream.
I'm picking up a prescription tomorrow so will ask the pharmacist.

ouch, i had similar and the pharmacist suggested magnesium sulphate under a plaster to draw the infection out, worked brilliantly

GrandmaSharksDentures · 30/11/2018 20:22

Going out on a limb, but that looks like a herpes sore to me. Interesting that you currently have a cold sore.

Cocolepew · 30/11/2018 20:25

Cold sore is gone but I had about 9 blisters, I usually get it in the same place at this time of year.
I have an auto immune disease too and I'm finding any cut is now getting much worse before it gets better.
Thanks for the replies Smile

I'll bear that in mind dogsaster do you buy the mag sulphate at the chemist?

OP posts:
dogsaster · 30/11/2018 20:46

I did but the pharmacist had a good look first, probably worth considering the cold sore coincidence, I don't get cold sores so don't want to be responsible for saying it will help, the pus is what made me think infection as thought cold sores don't have the infection element? Either way I hope it gets better soon

Cocolepew · 30/11/2018 20:57

Thanks Smile

Is it itchy? Could be a chilblain if so, especially after the cold snap.

willdoitinaminute · 30/11/2018 21:08

Herpetic whitlow, use to be very common in the dental profession before we started wearing gloves. Infection developed in small cuts after working on patients with cold sores. That’s why we wear gloves they protect us from picking up infections from patients.
Pop along to your pharmacist and they will sort out an antiviral cream.
In the meantime cover it up and use your own soap and towels.
Alternatively could be impertinent. A bacterial infection, again pharmacy for suitable treatment and avoid spreading to other parts of your body or any one else’s body!

I had something on my finger that looked exactly like this, which also started from a small scratch.

It got worse over the course of a week or two, by the time I went to the gp he tried to clean it and realised it had gone pretty deep, sent me straight to A&E.

Not to sound too scary but I almost lost my hand as the infection quickly started tracking up my arm. As it was I lost a big chunk of flesh from my finger (which has now grown over a couple of years later, but still gives me a lot of trouble)

So please get it seen by somebody tomorrow. Better safe than sorry!

CurlsLDN · 30/11/2018 21:16

Ps mine also had the white lumpy bit, which felt solid.

Cocolepew · 30/11/2018 21:22

It's completely solid, no pus or discharge and hasn't got bigger other than going solid and raised.
It's a stupid, solid lump Grin
I've had it for a couple of weeks , it hasn't spread and the red area hasn't got bigger, I was keeping an eye on it to be sure.
