Vitamins to perk me up over winter, vitamin D?

I think I need to take some supplements, for the last month since winter really kicked in and it got darker I’ve felt permanently exhausted, I have no motivation for anything and could quite easily lie down and not move again. I’m absolutely freezing cold all the time and and picking up constant coughs and viruses and my hair seems to be thinning. A friend recommended vitamin D but not sure what dose would be most effective? Is there anything else I should be taking as well?
I should add, I was on a pretty extreme diet for around 2 months previously in quite a large calorie deficit averaging maybe 800 cals per day however have upped that to normal range now, so I’m wondering if that’s played a part.

Could be. Maybe low in iron too? Get a blood test done.

Crinkle77 · 29/11/2018 21:06

It might be worth getting a blood test. My vitamin D was so low i had to get a loading dose to boost me back up.

I had a work check up in September and my vitamin d was about 57 which after the hottest summer on record - when I’d cycled to work tons and been out and about a lot - was pretty abysmal. I’ve been taking spray vitamin d (d3 and k2) as well as b12 and actually I think I am feeling quite a lot better given the time of year and how busy work is. Worth getting it checked. I think you can get it done privately. Apparently your levels should be over 100 to be optimal

I take a very high dose of vitamin D over winter that was recommended by my GP, I also bought a daylight lamp that's helped tremendously. I think you should pay a visit to your GP to get checked out and I don't think the VLC diet you've been on has helped.

hmmwhatatodo · 29/11/2018 21:20

What’s the daylight lamp Daphne? I’ve been feeling similar op and worse actually. For the past 3 days I’ve started taking a vitamin d tablet (25 something or other) and a couple of ferrous fummerate tablets a day. Any idea how long the vitamin d tablets take to kick in and do they actually make you feel less worn out/miserable. I’m feeling minimally better the past couple of days but it doesn’t help that I was ill last week and also had a period that I now appear to be in day 7 of.

hmmwhatatodo vitamin D takes about 2 weeks at night dose to take effect.

SugarTwist pop to the GP and explain and they'll do full bloodwork for you. It's best to know what you're deficient in as many of them have similar symptoms.

I bought it from sad.co.uk. It's a light that you use for 20 minutes a day. I used to suffer terribly in winter with low mood and it's transformed my life. It's this one. I saw it recommended on another thread on here and ordered one thinking "well it can do no harm". I feel so much better using it.

Holland and Barrett Super One formula multivitamins and multi-minerals have 200% of the RDA of vitamin D. They also contain amino acids. They are quite strong though so most days I just take half of one.

redsummershoes · 29/11/2018 22:35

vit d definitly is something to consider.
another thing is a broad spectrum led light bulb (grow light) so you get a good dose of light to help with mood.

Thank you for the replies. I have a GP appointment booked but there is a 3 week wait and I just want to do something now. I have ordered a vitamin D spray. If I take a multi vitamin too which also contains vitamin D is there any danger of having too much?

Hi there

I was feeling exactly like you before winter even kicked in.was loosing hair in dramatic amounts too.
Feeling cold.
Blood tests for everything.
I was surprised to be told that my vitamin d so low the doctor had seen more in a corpse! I work outside all year too, in “that” summer we had.
I’m now on a 60000 dose per week which is very very high!!
But 3 weeks in I’m feeling miles better.
Because I’ve googled so much, spoken to some experts too most general people should take at least 1000mg to 2000mg of Vit D a day.
To balance out the correct absorption in your body though it’s critical you take 300mg of magnesium along side( I didn’t know this first of all and the Vit D dose I’m on made me nauseous and upset belly) soon as I started magnesium with it was good.
Then take 1000mg of Vit c and 1000 mg of b12 and I’m right as rain!!
So for your shopping list
1500mg a day Vit D
1000mg Vit c
1000mg b12.
300mg magnesium.
You will be rattling but feel miles better and no hair loss :-)
Hope this helps, feel free to message.

Not sure how much Vit D delivery you get in a shot of spray, so check it’s avout 1500mg

You have nothing to lose from trying Vit D. For me it’s my essential vitamin. Even when I don’t have my life together enough to take other vits, D is the one I have to have in order to function.
