Question for drivers and pedestrians.

Two lanes of traffic, bot ways, with a rail road crossing. The barriers are down so one side has cars waiting for the barriers to come up and one side is empty.

I leave the shop with children and I am on the side with the queue of cars waiting for the barriers to go up.

I motion to the car I'd like to pass and let them know that I'm about to cross in front of them with the children and they motion that they have seen me.

The car in front obviously doesn't notice me as for whatever reason it starts to back up. I bang manically on the boot and he stops before pinning me and the kids into the car behind.

Who is in the wrong?

I'm sure he fucked up as he should have checked behind him before backing up simply so he didn't hit the car behind. I'm just curious if people think we shouldn't have tried to cross there or not and what other pedestrians do?

Question for drivers and pedestrians.

He was careless and should checked mirrors before completing the manoeuvre. It's always a risk though to walk between cars though. Can you cross in front of the first car in queue alongside the barrier?

VeggyGravy · 29/11/2018 16:51

I can I guess. But it adds a minute or two as I'm going to straight across normally and continuing. I guess I will in the future though.

I just assume everyone and everything is a potential hazard on the road and I am not disappointed often Grin

I have driven but choose not to as I find the whole thing terrifying. I just assumed most people think like you though! He was driving a mercedes you think he'd look just so he didn't wreck his car on the one behind!

The pedestrian always has right of way. But regardless of that, he didn't check his mirrors so even more wrong

Howhot · 29/11/2018 17:03

He 100% should have checked his mirrors and obviously did not. Not the best place to cross a road but driver is in the wrong

citiesofbismuth · 29/11/2018 17:06

I have to say, that's a first class diagram 👌

Bigonesmallone3 · 29/11/2018 17:08

Regardless of where u should and shouldn't cross he hasn't checked all his mirrors before carrying out a manoeuvre..
where on earth was he goin to go?

UrsulaPandress · 29/11/2018 17:10

Brilliant diagram. What on earth was he reversing for?

He should have checked.

A woman did this to me as I limped walked behind her car to get to the trolley store in a supermarket car park. I had to bang my mulberry handbag on her boot to stop her. She just sort of shrugged.

Fantastic diagram OP.

The driver should have checked his mirrors. He could have hit the car behind even if you weren't crossing. No excuses for any driver not to look where they're going before manoeuvring.

ALemonyPea · 29/11/2018 17:21

Firstly, bravo on the diagramme!

The driver who reversed is in the wrong as they should have checked their mirrors before doing a manoeuvre. Why were they reversing in stationary traffic?

Finfintytint · 29/11/2018 19:47

I'm guessing they were wanting to do a U turn

VeggyGravy · 29/11/2018 21:41

Grin

Good to see I wasn't unreasonable (at least about the diagram!)

I'm not sure why, maybe he noticed he was too close to the person in front of him? I don't think he was going for a Uturn, he didn't go for one after I walked away. He migth have been a bit in shock though, he did apologise profusely and even shout it several times as I walked away.
