What are the best supermarket stollen and mince pies?

Enjoyed the Aldi mini stollen I've tried, is it the best or should I try Lidl too?

Do we have a verdict yet on the mince pie crop this year - where are the nicest to be found?

Sainsbury's instore bakery ones are fantastic.

nozzel · 29/11/2018 19:27

Costco mince pies are sublime

Oly5 · 29/11/2018 20:37

Waitrose all butter mince pies are good, but I also like the M&S all butter ones!
M&S stollen

I bought one from Pret A Manger, it was perfect. Like light as a feather but substantial too. Really sublime.

I love the iceland luxury mince pies, they're my personal favourite!
Both Aldi and Lidl do good mini stollen Smile

threeicklepickles · 29/11/2018 23:35

Adds extra special, Lidl delux and Iceland luxury were the top 3 according to Which

KittensAndCake · 29/11/2018 23:45

Hope you are all checking the labels for palm oil?
I am 😊
That's why I've gone for Iceland's mince pies this year that and the fact Aldi are not doing their choc orange ones this year, grrrr

Cuzcothellama · 30/11/2018 06:26

How deep fill are all these mince pies? I'm not a fan of deep ones, I admit. I tend to make my own puff pastry ones and then I can get the filling just right.

I know it hasn't been mentioned on the thread, but we had an amazing panettone from Lidl last year.

Axlcat · 30/11/2018 06:58

M&S stollen bites are delicious. And responsible for my extreme weight gain last Christmas.

onthenaughtystepagain · 30/11/2018 07:17

Am I alone then i thinking all the messed around ones, Black Forest, cherry and chocolate, gin (?) etc sound revolting??
I make the Deliah mince meat, takes about twenty minutes to throw together and make some buttery pastry, lovely, and I did it when I was working full time too, before anyone has a go.
I once bought Stollen bites from Sainsbury's years ago and they were quite nice, warmed a little, though I'm not a fan of Stollen generally. We lived 10 years in Germany and rarely bought it nor the other cinnamony stuff, Lebkuchen, Spekulatis, now the family think it's odd if I don't trog off to Aldo though they never get eaten.

MerryMarigold · 30/11/2018 07:24

Loved the Greggs ones last year

ineedsomeinspiration · 30/11/2018 09:37

Sainsburys Bakery are the best I've had.

NachosPlease · 30/11/2018 10:02

Betty’s! Betty’s mince pies are the absolute best. Even better if you can eat them in one of their Yorkshire cafes, but they can be ordered online.

caperplips · 30/11/2018 10:18

So far we have enjoyed Stollen with marzipan in the center, the mini dark choc stollen bites (my personal fav) and milk choc dipped lebruchken (dh's fav) all from Aldi.
I have my eye on the specially select pannetone and the frangipane mince pies, also all from Aldi but am trying to lose a stone so am resisting. For now!

I used to rate M&S above all others but in last 3 or 4 years have 100% switched to Aldi

Cakemonger · 30/11/2018 12:02

Yes to Betty's. Officially the best mince pies on the planet.

NachosPlease · 30/11/2018 12:17

Betty’s do the classic ones which are my favourites, DH likes the frangipane and ricciorelli ones as well. We ate an embarrassing amount of them when we lived near a Betty’s.

mortifiedmama · 30/11/2018 13:15

@PlainVanilla it's a bit late to be making mincemeat now. Won't have time to mature.

waltzingparrot · 30/11/2018 13:17

Almost on topic.... Lidl's' Christmas Spiced' fudge really is Christmas in a fudge.

mortifiedmama · 30/11/2018 13:17

Why on earth would they put palm oil in mince pies. Ridiculous.

CointreauVersial · 30/11/2018 13:20

The M&S posh mince pies, with the star on top, are pretty delicious; the pastry is really short and crumbly.

Branleuse · 30/11/2018 13:30

Lidl mince pies are great, and the aldi almond mince tarts are wonderful.
Coop luxury are pretty good.

chachaboom · 30/11/2018 13:40

Lidl Deluxe mince pies pastry is lush. I won't ever buy a shitty £1 box of Asda/Tesco ones again.

KittensAndCake · 30/11/2018 13:45

Why on earth would they put palm oil in mince pies. Ridiculous.

They put it in nearly everything, literally. I've been trying to cut it out for the poor orangutans sake but it's so hard to find food without it, especially at Christmas with all the chocolate, cakes etc Hmm

mortifiedmama · 30/11/2018 13:50

KittensAndCake I know they do, but why it doesn't even taste nice.

It is cheap though.

And to be fair, when not attaching the orangutans home it is very environmentally friendly.

TheFillijonk · 30/11/2018 13:59

Lidl stollen bites are not a patch on the Aldi ones.
