Food you're curious about but have never tried

I'm veggie for 30 years so I have a LOT of these. So lots I never will try but I still love food and I'm curious what they taste like/of and textures etc

And I think I may not be the only one. So not just a thread where you can say the things you've never tried but can describe for others those you have?

So here goes I have never tried:

Truffles - the fungal kind, mainly a budget issue (I've had WAY too many of the chocolate kind!)
Scallops
Fray bentos pies
Century egg
Hendersons relish
Eggs that aren't chicken ones - quail, duck etc do they all taste the same?
Kimchi (new takeout place offers it haven't braved it yet)
Raw fish
Smoked salmon
Jellied eel
Cockney pie, mash and liquor (what is this? Is it gravy?)

I'm sure I'll think of more too

So if you've tried these tell me what they taste like and if anyone posts anything I've eaten I'll return the favour.

Interested to see what people put.

Definitely bugs. I've been reading a series of sci fi books where most humans eat bugs (cheap, easy to farm protein) and eating mammals is considered really icky. It's made me curious.

Krill. Do people eat it?

I had allergy tests done after a bad reaction from seafood, and I'm more or less allergic to all of it, turns out. But apparently krill is right on top of the list of things I should never eat. I never have, but now I really want to!

Chickens feet!
I saw them on a CBBC food programme and all the kids LOVED them!

Try truffle oil as a cheaper way to see if you like it

Hisaishi · 30/11/2018 10:11

snog I actually like chicken feet! The sauce they use on it is too spicy for me (Korean style, don't know about other countries) but the texture is nice. Just like eating a chewy bit of batter.

Might ask for truffle oil for Xmas

I’ve eaten bugs at a science expo. I quite liked them, ants are naturally acidic so they taste like salt and vinegar crisps, the others had flavouring on so were like eating nuts or crisps. The only one I didn’t try was the giant cricket because it looked very leggy, I could imagine picking bits of thigh out of my teeth. I’d honestly be perfectly happy eating insects regularly, there’s not much difference between them and crustaceans really.

I adore smoked salmon - could eat it by the bucket load.

I also love octopus and baby octopus if anyone wants to know.

HebeMumsnet · 30/11/2018 12:57

Steak tartare. Often tempted. Never quite dared. Is it nice?

Hisaishi · 30/11/2018 13:15

Steak tartare is nice, I love it.

Graphista · 30/11/2018 15:14

Dd (who was a fussy pre teen at the time) had octopus at a wedding and really liked it. My budget doesn't really stretch to such exotic food though Grin

An mnhq response oooh I'm flattered

I've had steak tartare pre veggie I liked it but it was over 30 years ago so wouldn't attempt to try and remember and describe now.

As a veggie I find it odd when meat eaters are OK eating one kind of meat but squeamish about others, it's all the same to me.

I'm not a squeamish type so don't mind handling meat/fish but I just don't want to eat it myself.

Steak tartare - served with a raw egg on top - was one of the worst dishes I have ever tasted.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 30/11/2018 16:25

My DH loves steak tartare, I don’t. It’s a texture thing with me, I don’t like rare steak or any other kind of meat because of the texture. Many years ago in japan I was served raw horse meat, I don’t have a problem with eating horse, but I really struggled with eating slices of raw meat.
