Food you're curious about but have never tried

Graphista · 28/11/2018 18:42

I'm veggie for 30 years so I have a LOT of these. So lots I never will try but I still love food and I'm curious what they taste like/of and textures etc

And I think I may not be the only one. So not just a thread where you can say the things you've never tried but can describe for others those you have?

So here goes I have never tried:

Truffles - the fungal kind, mainly a budget issue (I've had WAY too many of the chocolate kind!)
Scallops
Fray bentos pies
Century egg
Hendersons relish
Eggs that aren't chicken ones - quail, duck etc do they all taste the same?
Kimchi (new takeout place offers it haven't braved it yet)
Raw fish
Smoked salmon
Jellied eel
Cockney pie, mash and liquor (what is this? Is it gravy?)

I'm sure I'll think of more too

So if you've tried these tell me what they taste like and if anyone posts anything I've eaten I'll return the favour.

Interested to see what people put.

Oysters are my favourite thing in the whole world. I have NO idea why - they taste like saltwater and have the texture of a giant bogey, so there is NO LOGIC to my unadulterated love for them, but I am never, ever happier than when I'm sat in front of a plate of 12. My advice to people trying them for the first time is not to chew - it won't work and the potential for salty-juice-spurt-shock is too risky. Just a squeeze of lemon and knock it back....

Scallops are soft and so smooth all the way through that they're a bit squeaky on your teeth. Delicate, slightly sweet flavour, in the way that herbal teas when brewed lightly have a delicate taste.

And lobster's fairly sweet, too, which is odd as the texture is so meaty.

Todamhottoday · 28/11/2018 19:41

Used to live in SE Asia and Durian is an accured taste and airlines and hotels will not allow it to be taken on board or be eaten in rooms. Word of warning never ever have alcohol esp beer after eating it, it ferments
in the stomach and is vile. I like it myself esp the more orange coloured ones....yum but then I like very smelly rancid cheese's.

I love kimchi, and make my own its very moorish.

Hate raw fish and a lot of Japanese foods as they are very textural and I can not be done with it, but will try anything once, some of the foods I have eaten in Japan were...well... Sea urching fall into this textural thing, ugh..

I must admit I cannot think of anything that I really want to taste as I have tried all on your list and many many other foods.

Sometimes think people should like certain foods, just becuse they are expensive and are seen as 'posh', lobster, caviar and the like

ScreamingValenta · 28/11/2018 19:42

Hermano What were they like???

Truffles taste of essence of woodland, a rich dark taste. Add a little good truffle oil to any mushroom dish to heighten the mushroomy taste.

Scallops taste of fresh sweet sea breeze. Quite a firm texture, very similar to lobster.

Quail eggs are mild and delicate, duck eggs are much richer like a concentrated egg flavour, they make the best baked egg custard, very rich and creamy.

Smoked salmon, varies depending what it has been smoked with, I like it peaty or oaky, which bring out its fish flavours. I prefer gravlax as I like the more chewy texture.

ladybee28 · 28/11/2018 19:43

Not many things I haven't tried, to be honest – or at least that I'm curious about. I think I've had the luck / adventurousness to do pretty well on that front...

Maybe bugs? Crickets and silk worms and things,Thai street-food style? Can't imagine I'd ever want to, but I am curious to hear...

Todamhottoday · 28/11/2018 19:46

Hermano, lobster thermidore was quite nice but I have yet to find a good lobster that just not just taste like a large prawn. Had them just caught in New England as well as in the UK.

Try the darker durian, more custard creamy

ComtesseDeSpair · 28/11/2018 19:47

Jellied eel - people always say it’s rank (including a couple of people on this thread already) which puts me off wanting to take the leap. But I like fish and strong flavoured things and oddly textured things so really should just try.

Lunalula · 28/11/2018 19:48

Not gonna lie, I'd love to try stinking bishop cheese! I love all cheeses but never tried that one before.
I'm also curious about
escargots (however you spell it)
Mussels
Boar
Lobster

BluthsFrozenBananas · 28/11/2018 19:50

Quite a lot of your list are some of my favourite foods, raw fish, smoked salmon, truffles, kimchi, duck eggs and scallops. Not so much fray bentos pies though, and I don’t think you could pay me enough to put a jellied eel in my mouth.

I really want to try poutine (Canadian dish of chips, brown gravy and cheese curds), poke (Hawaiian raw fish salad) and durian.

December24 · 28/11/2018 19:51

Jackfruit. I keep seeing it on menus, but to me it sounds like it'd be one of those really rank tasting fruits.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 28/11/2018 19:57

I’ve tried stinking Bishop. I like a good strong cheese, but this was too much for me, it tasted kind of like the smell of a farmyard.

Drookit · 28/11/2018 19:57

Pie mash and liquor- the cheapest school dinner/ready meal pie with a thin, thin layer of brown between the equally tasteless "pastry", Lumpy watery mash, Green stuff-tasting of nothing gloopy green stuff...think its meant to be parsley sauce.

I'd like to try truffle too
And a decent lobster as I've been distinctly underwhelmed up till now, ditto crab.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/11/2018 20:30

Yo sushi.
I love sushi, but I have this fear that I’ll end up spending a ridiculous amount of money as all those plates go whooshing past!

Graphista · 28/11/2018 20:44

Don't think I'm missing much on smoked salmon then.

Oh I've never had oysters either.

Lastqueenofscotland - I've had some of those but too long ago to reliably describe. I've also never had game aside from rabbit pie when little which I remember enjoying but don't really remember the taste.

Notallindivoduals - I usually get veggie Worcester sauce from Holland & Barrett might try hendersons

Formerbabe - that doesn't really tell me what it's like though (I had lovely school dinners).

"Truffles - are like the essence of mushrooms - earthy and aromatic" oh good I love mushrooms maybe I should try something truffly if I ever have the money - the prices!

"Fray Bentos pies- not had one for years, but as far as I remember, much like any other pie with 'canned' meat flavour" never had canned meat either.

Thanks re egg flavours.

Scallops - I'm trying to imagine sweet fish. A bit crab/prawn like maybe? I used to like those

Jellied eel - I can see texture being gross but flavour? Isn't it just fishy?

Kimchi I must try think I'd like. I love sauerkraut I like other "umami" foods.

Durian is a good call - how can something bad smelling be supposedly delicious?! What the hells a dirty aftertaste??

I like parsley sauce but seems weird to have with pie & mash!

Didn't even know you COULD eat sea urchins!

I don't think I've had lobster either and as a veggie for ethical reasons I don't like the boiling alive thing either.

I LOVE figs, sweet slightly tangy & juicy, love them dried too but have to be careful of ahem the effects 😳

Also curious re "mediaeval banquet" items

Avocado - oily/creamy but firm texture, tastes a bit unsalted buttery/fresh sweet green veg type taste? Hard to explain taste isn't it?

Caviar - has stuck with me - VERY salty (and I like salty but this was too much) bobbly/popping/watery texture - not pleasant

Ooh yes stinking bishop - I love cheese and to quote Monica "the smellier the better" so think I'd like it

Escargot I haven't tried, both parents have and say as I liked mussels, cockles etc & I love garlic that I'd like them.

Poutine - yes I've debated doing a veggie version of chips, veggie gravy & cottage cheese

Jackfruit I've not tried either

Yosushi - Is dd & i's treat place. Not stupid expensive but not cheap either. The prices are explained before you choose. It's a colour coded pricing system so you can avoid or limit the pricier options and you have to order hot options anyway. We also are "members" and get discount codes & vouchers so we use those.

Stinking Bishop is one of my faves! its delicious.

Boar is nice, stronger than pork almost like beef.

Love mussels as well.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 28/11/2018 20:56

Pie and mash is the food of the gods.

Always wanted to try wagyu beef, and authentic Mexican street food. And authentic street food in a lot of places, come to think of it.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 28/11/2018 20:58

DH ate a whole wedge of Stinking Bishop and was violently sick several hours later. Tastes nice, but literally smells like death.

AdaColeman · 28/11/2018 21:08

Boar, more like well hung beef than pork, full of flavour.

Snails, a bit chewy, often packed with garlic butter so that is the dominant taste, but I've had them in wine based stews too, and they have quite a meaty flavour then.

Mussels are a favourite of mine, especially served with crunchy chips to contrast with the soft juicy shell fish. Very delicate and mild taste, delicious.

redexpat · 28/11/2018 21:12

Egnog. Americans drink it at Christmas. No idea what it is!

Unescorted · 28/11/2018 21:16

I love game... It is strong savoury taste and tender texture

Smoked salmon depends so much on the smoke and the skill of the smoker. You by what you pay for. Loch Torridon Smokehouse is worth getting in my opinion. Lovely smooth taste and texture.

I had escargot once... Chewy garlic butter mushrooms. Don't see the attraction.

Dorian fruit....yuckyuckyuck.

Oysters as above unless smoked.

I quite quite fancy trying some of the fungus you see in the Chinese supermarket... But they look challenging.

AdaColeman · 28/11/2018 21:21

Home made egg go is a raw egg beaten into a glass of milk, sometimes with a shot of brandy or sherry added, and a sprinkle of nutmeg.
I think the commercial variety is like advocaat.

In Belgium advocaat is very thick and creamy, served in tiny glasses to be eaten with a little spoon.

elephantoverthehill · 28/11/2018 21:31

DM used to give us 'egg nog' - the child friendly version. Milk, raw egg, sugar and vanilla extract, all put into the Kenwood liquidiser, so it would go all frothy. I've done it for my DCs and added a 'healthy element' - a banana Grin. Mind you she also used to give me 'pink champagne' - Andrew's Liver Salts diluted in Ribena!

RedWineIsFabulous · 28/11/2018 21:33

FormerBabe

Me too.

It’s absolutely disgusting but my whole family think it is divine.

Shock
RedWineIsFabulous · 28/11/2018 21:34

Not read through the thread but isn’t eggnog Advocaat or am I being silly?!

Loyaultemelie · 28/11/2018 22:48

Eggnog made me violently ill Envy

I'm also veggie and was really looking forward to jackfruit but was really disappointed it was kind of bitter (unless mine was off!)

I love quails eggs but was really disappointed with goose eggs
