Wouldn’t you take your year 8 child out of school for a week for a once ina. Lifetime holiday ?

I’d it saved you over 1k

Yes, although I’d have to accept any fines as well.

LardLizard · 28/11/2018 15:07

Yes I would pay the fine striaght away

We took our DD our of school for a week for a huge family holiday for DMIL & her twin sisters birthday. Spoke to the school prior to the holiday and they were totally fine with it. My DD has very good attendance and I asked to take work away with us that she would miss. Also it saved on average every family £1200!!

Nesssie · 28/11/2018 15:11

Yes but then you pay the fine and not kick up a huge fuss like the recent family in the news...

TeenTimesTwo · 28/11/2018 15:13

I wouldn't, no.

But I think it depends on what proportion the 1k saved is.

So total cost 1k rather than 2k, and that counts as a 'once in a lifetime' amount, then yes.

Total cost 10k rather than 11k, then no, I'd choose a slightly cheaper holiday.

Plus my DC struggles in school and missing a week would need a big catch up.

Sirzy · 28/11/2018 15:13

As a one off and knowing it won’t be authorised and you may be fined then yes

longwayoff · 28/11/2018 15:18

Yes. Education is not the exclusive preserve of schools. We're not raising battery chickens.

LardLizard · 28/11/2018 15:52

Thanks for the replies, I was expecting a roasting

colditz · 28/11/2018 15:53

Yes I would, but I'd lie about it and say he'd been ill.

PinkCalluna · 28/11/2018 15:55

It depends what “holiday of a life time means”.

If it was something actually educational and genuinely a one off opportunity then possibly.

Something like Disneyland then no.

Our general policy is not to take the children out of school and we live in Scotland so no fines to worry about.

Sheitgeist · 28/11/2018 15:55

I would, too.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 28/11/2018 15:58

We took our 8 and 6 year olds out for 3 weeks for a family wedding on a different continent. They did extra work to catch up and learned loads while they were there. I have no regrets whatsoever.

Yulebealrite · 28/11/2018 15:59

yes

Crunchymum · 28/11/2018 15:59

Depends on the holiday and whether it's once in a lifetime for the kids or the parents (IE will the kids be spending a week stuck on a beach or will they actually be doing something enriching?)

Wolfiefan · 28/11/2018 16:00

If it was truly a once in a lifetime and can’t be done at another time then I would.
If it’s CBA to save for longer or wait until kids leave school then I wouldn’t.
If your child has poor attendance then I wouldn’t.
And please don’t expect the school to send work or sort catch up.

GhostSauce · 28/11/2018 16:00

Yes.

halfwitpicker · 28/11/2018 16:00

Of course.

Fines?

cuddlymunchkin · 28/11/2018 16:01

Just say she's ill...

AfterSchoolWorry · 28/11/2018 16:02

Yep, and I work in education. Imho travel is far more important than 2 weeks of school.

Storm4star · 28/11/2018 16:02

The child is 8, a week out of school is hardly going to mess up their whole future! I absolutely would.

Wolfiefan · 28/11/2018 16:03

Don’t say she’s ill. Confused

immortalmarble · 28/11/2018 16:04

Year 8, not 8.

Storm4star · 28/11/2018 16:05

Ah ok, so what is that 12/13? I'd say the same thing.

Sunisshining5346 · 28/11/2018 16:09

Absolutely! A week from school won't make a difference..but they will cherish the memories of a holiday forever. And they can learn about cultures..different countries way of life etc instead 😊
