sophiec123 · 27/11/2018 20:57

So I'm fairly newish to mumsnet and have written a few posts asking certain things etc but was just wondering what some things on here mean....

"Searching someone's username"- how do people do this? I'm using the mobile app and have no clue what people mean when they say this

  • going NC???
  • changing usernames? How do you do this and why?
  • why is everyone dear?? Dear ex husband?

Last question first. Not a MN invention, the use of abbrvs already widespread by the time MN adopted the form.

Cba to answer the rest. No, really.

bumblebee39 · 27/11/2018 21:01

Google it there is a mumsnet abbreviations dictionary

Powerless · 27/11/2018 21:01

It's not Dear Husband etc its Darling Husband etc

NC is No Contact

I clicked on this for a wider philosophical debate about how you go about "understanding" Mumsnet when it's made up of so many disparate people. The only certainty is that nobody will agree and there will always be at least two Two Sides to Every Story.

Instead you literally mean how to understand Mumsnet. There's abbreviation and guidance notes for that.

sophiec123 · 27/11/2018 21:07

Yes literally...

Changing usernames -surely people do this on other forums? If not, bear in mind that Mumsnet is a behemoth. It's not like posting on budgies.co.uk or something. Mumsnet threads come to the top of Google searches, get pinched and rinsed for newspaper clickbait and even some actual articles. There are enormous numbers of posters and lurkers here. I've seen specific insults made about me by a relative of mine on here, and she lives in another country. People and groups who decide they don't like Mumsnet or the feminism boards carry out actual attacks here, DDOS or legal cases, or even reporting to the police. So many users change their names frequently because if you're that way inclined, it's very easy to identify individuals here. And that's because people post real things about their lives here. Which is why it is the size it is and has the reach it has.

Advanced search is on the mobile app, have a look, you'll find it.

CantSleepClownsWillEatMe · 27/11/2018 21:08

To change username go to 'My Mumsnet' up top and follow instructions.

Searching usernames - see advanced search up above. While it's obviously allowed it's not considered good form to then throw details from previous posts into a current thread. Well, unless someone is being a goody fucker or deliberate liar.

NC is no contact. There are a lot of MNers NC with their families.

Click on the button next to the large "Talk" at the top of the page to open a drop down menu of features including Acronyms which will explain some of queries.

I've never seen anyone use DEx! Grin

Doyoumind · 27/11/2018 21:09

I also expected in-depth analysis and debate. Disappointed.

Zoflorabore · 27/11/2018 21:10

I've been here almost 5 years op and I'm still learning every day! It takes a while to pick up the lingo but once you do it's fine.

There is definitely a section on here from MNHQ that explains all of the abbreviations.

I have never figured how to advance search a poster!

Changing username- in your account section there are options to change your username which some people do frequently. Say for example a poster talks about a very sensitive subject and doesn't want it to be traceable ( i.e. Someone doing an advanced search on her name which will bring up all previous threads etc and could help build a picture as to her identity ) they can change their name for the post and then change back if they wish to their usual name.
I have several but have only used them one at a time.

Ds/dd etc I always read as "dear" and not "darling" but they mean the same thing.

Welcome Flowers it's great here.

sophiec123 · 27/11/2018 21:12

Thankyou to the people actually replying to my query, as you can tell I'm a novice user! Still not sure why people comment on things when it's not to their taste😂🤔 no I don't understand the abbreviations, that's why I asked, I didn't realise there was an actual "dictionary"... just trying to use mumsnet and read people's post with an ounce of understand LITERALLY 😂😬

sophiec123 · 27/11/2018 21:14

Understanding...😂

@Zoflorabore thankyou!

Link to Mumsnet Acronym List. But don't worry too much about it - I've been on MN for way too long and still don't recognise half of them.

AssassinatedBeauty · 27/11/2018 21:34

If you're using the iPhone mobile app the search facility is at the top of the Active tab. On the main website there is a full advanced search facility, with many more search features. People who just use the website usually don't realise how different the mobile phone app is, and the reduced functionality.

sophiec123 · 27/11/2018 22:06

Thankyou for clearing that up @AssassinatedBeauty I think this is the issue that I'm having.
