Another maths homework question please

The answer we're getting doesn't match the (supposed!) correct answer.

Any help, very gratefully received.

Another maths homework question please

Lweji · 26/11/2018 19:19

8x = 37 ?
X = 37/8 ?

TeenTimesTwo · 26/11/2018 19:20

add 2x to each side
8x + 19 = 56
take 19 from each side
8x = 37 (!) (could well be a typo in question)
divide each side by 8
x = 4 5/8 = 4.675

TeenTimesTwo · 26/11/2018 19:21

SORRY 4.625 no 675

That's the answer we are getting but apparently the answer is 3!

(Which is the same as the number of meltdowns we've had so far Grin

OP posts:
AutumnCrow · 26/11/2018 19:22

Well, yeah, what Lweji said.

Lweji · 26/11/2018 19:22

What's the supposed correct answer?

Lweji · 26/11/2018 19:23

I was also guessing typo.

TeenTimesTwo · 26/11/2018 19:24

The answer is wrong. Smile

AutumnCrow · 26/11/2018 19:24

There's a typo then.

dementedpixie · 26/11/2018 19:25

Have you written it down correctly?

6x +19=56-2x
6x+2x=56-19
8x=37
×=37/8

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 26/11/2018 19:25

I got the same as TeenTimesTwo

x = 4.625

dementedpixie · 26/11/2018 19:25

Is it a typed or written question?

wineoclockthanks · 26/11/2018 19:26

Phew, I'm glad it's not just us who can't work it out. We've managed the other 35 questions but poor perfectionist, overtired DS (and his very similar mum), are stumped.

Thanks all.

OP posts:
TeenTimesTwo · 26/11/2018 19:27

The answer obviously isn't 3 as 37 does not equal 50.

wineoclockthanks · 26/11/2018 19:27

It's typed Pixie

TeenTimesTwo · 26/11/2018 19:28

That's what's nice about algebra, you know if you have the right answer as you can plug it (substitute it) back into the original equation.

wineoclockthanks · 26/11/2018 19:28

I wrote it out cos couldn't work out how to make the x not look like the multiplication sign

OP posts:
WTFIsAGleepglorp · 26/11/2018 19:30

56-(2×3)=50

It does not equal (6×3) + 19, which is 37.

Is this a trick question so that all the children don't come in with the answers copied out?

wineoclockthanks · 26/11/2018 19:30

Teen at the moment, there is NOTHING nice about algebra Grin

OP posts:
TeenTimesTwo · 26/11/2018 19:35

wine apart from trying to prove the book right rather than having faith in yourselves, there isn't a problem.

Algebra is like old fashioned weighing scales.
You have to keep the scales equal (level)
Whatever you do on one side, you have to do to the other.
So e.g. to get rid of the -2x on the RHS you have to add 2x, so you have to add 2x on the LHS too. etc.

Everything else in equation solving and formula manipulation goes from that principle.

dementedpixie · 26/11/2018 19:47

Can you take a picture of the question ?

RebelWitchFace · 26/11/2018 20:00

It's obviously a typo. Solving it doesn't give 3 and if you substitute x with 3 is not correct. A picture might help to figure out where the typo is but it's pretty irrelevant really.

Quartz2208 · 26/11/2018 20:05

Yeah the answer is 37/8

There is no way its 3

wineoclockthanks · 27/11/2018 18:41

The answer was a bloody typo!! Not impressed.

Thanks for everyone's help
