When will this bloody awful mattress smell go?

Bought a new mattress last week, probably been 5 days now. It's a memory foam one and came in plastic all tightly rolled up.

I laid it out and left it to breathe for a bit and my god.. the stench. We are very lucky that it's for a spare room and nobody is sleeping on it until 15 December because despite having the windows wide open in the room for 16 hours a day, the smell won't go.

It's a mouldy, chemical type smell. I googled and understand it's due to the 'gassing' of the mattress and quite normal but anyone know how long it's likely to last? It fills the entire room and hasn't lessened yet at all.

Can't remember how long but 6 years on.. I can confirm it doesn't stink

Can't febreeze it as then it'll be a heady mix of mould, chemicals and lavender Grin it won't take the smell away as it's the gasses coming off it

Thanks for that article! I'll give it a few more days I think and then speak to the retailer as it's just so so strong in the bedroom

That doesn’t sound right. Offgassing can’t be healthy for you for a start. My last new mattress had a slight smell but barely noticeable (ikea, for dds bed , she would have really complained if it had been very fumey).
I would contact the manufacturer tomorrow.

You have to walk on it. Lay it out on the floor and walk all over it for a few minutes then leave it and do the same the next day if it still stinks. I thought the delivery guy was taking the piss but it really does work.

BatF1nk · 26/11/2018 21:49

Oh really? I will be sure to do that. Just lay on the floor and stomp over it ?

@SirVixofVixHall normal apparently and most definitely a thing and apparently not harmful but I don't like the idea of it one bit

More Commonwith Foam mattresses that have been in plastic wrap for months prior to purchase

We got a new one two weeks ago and the smell has gone. It was unbearable for the first day (kept in the spare room). Manageable by day 2&3 but still smelly. Then became gradually less noticeable. I don't think my sense of smell if amazing though so I imagine others would find it worse for longer. Perhaps our sleeping on it from day 2 helped - like the stomping.

BatF1nk · 26/11/2018 22:43

Ok I'll do the walking on it. It's in a large room which is freezing cold and airy due to windows open. There's no way we could sleep on it though

And strangely when I sniff the mattress itself, it's ok. So it's definitely gasses it's giving off

Yep just walk around on it normally. No need to stomp.
