People need to secure their home webcams

This is scary. I'm on a site where you can see live webcam feeds. Most of them are boring surveillance views, but one or two are of people's houses. Kids playing in a lounge.

CV10 8** secure your webcam if you happen to be on mn.

Shit, CV10 is only around the corner from me, Nuneaton

Frankenterfer · 26/11/2018 20:03

Yes good call on the full postcodes.

Seems to me lots of churches, laundromats and barber shops.

BatsAreCool · 26/11/2018 20:07

My camera was so secure it took me 30 minutes to work out what I had changed the password to Grin

user187656748 · 26/11/2018 20:07

There's a surprisingly entertaining one of someone's tortoise eating something. It took me a while to work out what it was.

(It's a big old tort, btw)

danni0509 · 26/11/2018 20:16

How is it picking up inside peoples houses? From what camera. Laptop? Phone? Etc

PurpleCrazyHorse · 26/11/2018 20:21

Didn't realise this at all. Was considering a camera so really good to know how to secure it.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 26/11/2018 20:28

@danni0509 those new fangled indoor cctv cameras you can buy that hook up to the wifi (so you can watch your cat while you're away!). Unfortunately if you don't change the default password, everyone can watch your cat while you're away Blush

Frankenterfer · 26/11/2018 20:33

N3 1HF front door & hall.

user187656748 · 26/11/2018 20:38

Carbsnomarbs · 26/11/2018 20:41

Frankenterfer · 26/11/2018 20:47

BD4 8PW stairs.

Notageek · 26/11/2018 20:48

Anything that is sent over the airwaves (as opposed to down a wire) can potentially be hacked by someone interceoting a signal ..BUT that’s why things like GSM(Mobiles) and DECT(most non wifi) baby monitors are securely encrypted to stop the singals being decoded into something you’d recognise.

With wifi devices like cameras etc the dangers include cheaper products not encrypting signal (takes the manufactuer work and cost to implement) , using no passwords or the same default password for every product of a particular make (easy to manufacture) or people exploiting the hacking the code through vulnerabilities.

To protect yourself try to ensure that you buy products that offer encryption or secure traffic, don’t buy products that don’t have a password, change to your own secure password and if you can make sure you keep the product updated with the latest software . If a super hacker finds a ‘vulnerability’ then reputable manufacturers will make sure a ‘patch’ is released.

BlackBeltInChildWrangling · 26/11/2018 20:48

It is home and business CCTV systems, baby monitors and web cams, I think.

I was just looking at a couple of (2014?) articles on the BBC technology pages, which mentioned 4 schools, children's bedrooms, living rooms and halls.

It disappoints me that, 4 years later, many people are still unaware of this issue and it seems like such awful websites have multiplied.

As well as just general privacy concerns, what is being used to aid crime or abuse, and what is making its way onto the dark web? It also occurs to me that it increases the risk to people who have fled DV, if local businesses such as shops and launderettes are up there too.

user187656748 · 26/11/2018 20:49

The one I am looking at is insecam.org

I can see there are other sites too.

GVmama · 26/11/2018 20:53

There is a Panorama about this currently on the BBC i player, it's well worth a watch. The title is Hacked: Smart Home Secrets.

SubtitlesOn · 26/11/2018 20:54

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 26/11/2018 21:01
