Domain Names? So confused!

I'm in the process of setting up my first website - I'm using Wix.

They will let me have a free domain name for one year when I buy an upgrade from them (which I have to do to accept payments via a website.)

My question is, would it be better to buy through, for example, GoDaddy, and would this work out cheaper once my first year is up?

Does it make any difference who I buy the domain name from? I assume once I've bought it, it is unavailable everywhere else anyway?

Thank you for any help- please remember though that if I'm not understanding this, I will need it explained in words of one syllable!

Once you buy the domain it's yours.

You do have to renew it each year, and Wix might at that point be more expensive than say NameCheap, in which case you'd have to transfer it to NameCheap, pay for it there, then update the DNS settings to point it to your Wix site.

I haven't used Wix so couldn't say from experience, but I tend to use NameCheap for all the domains I buy/manage.
