Best place to get cheap glasses?

I’ve broken my glasses (again!) and need a new pair. For the last decade I’ve been buying them in specsavers, some designer ones (two pairs for £125) but also sometimes from the cheaper ranges (£45 or even £25, which I’ve liked just as much). However I’m finding the selection there a bit rubbish at the moment. Where do you buy your (cheap-ish) glasses? Does anyone order them online? Ideally I would have the lenses thinned (cheaply) too... thanks!

Email your prescription over and they do the rest.

I've got mine from Glasses Direct for a few years: you can try frames at home if you want, before you order,there's loads of choice of frames and you can upload a picture to see how they would look on you.

There's usually an offer on, and I get cashback on Quidco - and it usually takes about a week for them to arrive.

Try different branches of Specsavers, I've only just found out that they are a franchise & different branches stock different frames, I've just paid £306 for 2 pairs of varifocal glasses with £125 designer frames. I'm due for new contact lenses & will qualify for a free pair of cheaper frames or a reduction on the more expensive ones, I got a voucher for £67.50 off my glasses as I'm on tax credits.

£45 all in, including frames, lenses, varifocals if needed, sunglasses option, thinner lightweight lenses if your prescription is over a certain number.

Also have a designer frame option, but to be honest the basics range is really good, I've had my last three pairs from them.

I highly recommend you take your current prescription to an Asda that has an Opticians in-store. They are great!

I've used Glasses Direct for years too & always been happy with them.

My eye sight is pretty rubbish (-11.5 in both eyes). Best place for me to go is asda. They thin them for no extra charge so I get a pair of glasses for £50. Places like glasses direct would actually cost more for me as they charge for thinning I get free with asda

Another vote for glasses direct. You order 4 different frames and they send them to you free for a week’s trial-you just pop them back in the post or you don’t like them-I think I did 3 trials before choosing!

You then enter your prescription details online and buy the ones you like. I found a code as well when it came to ordering. that gave me two pairs for about £50!

I buy them in Poundland. £1 a pair. Absolutely brilliant as long as you can find the right strength for you.

I have about 6 different pairs spread around the house so it doesn't matter if I lose or break a set .

Asda if you want the personal service

Glasses direct - how do they sort the sizing thing or is that a con by high street opticians? I always seem to need arms adjusted

Glasses direct here too. I get my test done in whatever local opticians has a free or cheap offer, and buy from glasses direct. They always have offers on too, it's worth looking online for vouchers, they often have new customer offers too.

Graphista with GD, I find it easier to get the numbers on a pair of glasses I like already (usually written on the arms- something 52-16-140 and use their search to find the styles that match this and start from there. The site has explanations of what all these numbers mean on it (though the first time I used them, my Monsoon-from-Boots-hugely-expensive ones didn't have it printed anywhere, so I used their picture feature to find some I thought would do and went from there.

My biggest problem is width, actually - I'm obese and frames not wide enough for my face make me look even fatter. But I may have standard face-ears length I suppose... I know opticians always fiddle around "fitting" glasses, but I have not noticed any difference with GD through not having any twiddling.

I've used glasses direct, selectspecs and speckyfoureyes all good. I buy loads I have a pair in every room, in the car and in my handbag.

Maybeicanhelp is that really £45 including varifocal? I usually buy single vision but like bifocals for some things.

Really interested in the answers too this as my last pair cosy almost £500, mostly for verifocal lenses.

My prescription is +3.5 for one eye & -3.5 in the other eye, so don't know is that's why. I've been putting off buying a new pair for over 18 months now even though they're scratched to bits and falling apart. I just can't justify the cost.

Do Asda actually do the eye tests as well?

Yep, Science - they usually have a board outside showing any available appointments for that day, or you can book as normal. I find that they're more straightforward than Boots, in that, invariably, Boots tell me I need new glasses for a very slight change, whereas Asda will explain better and usually say not to bother this time etc. (I have to have quite frequent tests as I have a stress-induced condition, so it's actually very helpful for me to know if there's actually a marked deterioration - which is probably ageing or whatever, or if it's a minor change, which is almost certainly a stress marker rather than an actual change)

I always go to Asda now, as a result.
