Is this a coincidence? Bit creeped out.

Yesterday I was browsing in Sainsbury's on my own and picked up a bottle of E45 with evening primrose to have a look as I'd not seen it before and normal e45 works well on my husbands dry skin. Didn't say a word just read the back and put it back on the shelf. I was on my own so wasn't talking.

Didn't think anything of it and have not mentioned it at all. This morning I open the amazon app and up pops an advert for this specific e45 I was looking at yesterday! Of all the millions of things on amazon. Weird!

Jeff Bezos was behind you in Sainsbury’s Wink

Coincidence - you will get loads and loads of ads but inly some will catch your eye! If you’ve bought any online or looked at an article about it or their website then you will be on the radar for targeted ads!

PivotPivotPIVOTTT · 25/11/2018 10:03

I've just went into the Amazon app and have an ad for it too so just a coincidence. I get it though, stuff like that happens to me all the time and it creeps me out.

PersonaNonGarter · 25/11/2018 10:07

I am convinced my phone is listening to me - I discuss a product and then it is suggested when I next open my phone ...

Now getting the colonel jogging pants and immigration lawyers.

I went food shopping in M & S yesterday & my Instagram feed was swamped with their Christmas food ads.Hadn’t seen one ad before that. Don’t think it’s a coincidence. The same has also happened in Tesco and I’ve also noticed if I take Panadol at home I ge ads on my phone for it. So, it’s either the camera or the microphone or maybe it’s something else entirely. Creepy though.

lemony7 · 25/11/2018 16:55

I was talking to DH about sock yarn (he wants me to make him some socks for Xmas) and the next day had emails and adverts about it! I hadn’t looked online for it either 🤔🤔🤔

BlancheM · 25/11/2018 17:40

It's possible you saw the ad first and it went into your subconscious which prompted you to pick it up in the supermarket.

DD was talking about river island kids last night then this morning she ran in freaked out because the river island site popped up when she switched on her iPad Shock

tenredthings · 25/11/2018 17:49

Some of the apps already installed on your phone give access to your microphone, location and camera so it's perfectly possible, though paranoia inducing to believe that you are being spied on. Good to check the microphone, camera settings on your phone/ tablet and get in the habit of clearing your cookie cache. Another theory is that we are all constantly creating our reality with our thoughts and imagination ( excuse me whilst I don my tin foil hat ) !

HippoLatte · 25/11/2018 17:51

Your phone does listen to you. I googled it after a workman had been in my home and we were discussing the name of the company he worked for and after he left I went on facebook on my phone and the first ads that came up were for his company. Also the same thing happened when DP and I were discussing holidays and the ads were for the exact place we had been discussing, right down to the hotel they were advertising.

Kemer2018 · 25/11/2018 17:52

Go into all your apps and turn off the microphone and camera if you like.

cannycat20 · 25/11/2018 17:53

Do you have location services turned on, on your phone and computers, by any chance?!

Omgineedanamechange · 25/11/2018 17:56

A couple of weeks ago I was on a course, I met three people there that all worked for a certain companywhich makes a very unique product that I would never buy. I spoke to the three of them about their company and product, and that was that.

The following day my Facebook feed had an ad for this company on it. I never googled it, have never looked at similar products.

I swear my phone was listening.

WeeM · 25/11/2018 17:58

If you have Bluetooth turned on, stores use this to know you were in or near their store and they will target ads to your phone. Probably just a case of coincidence with the e45 but definitely less so with the marks/Tesco.

LonelyOversharer · 25/11/2018 18:10

See, I won't have alexa in the house. My sisters internet is locked down solid. She is sure the world is interested in her, in particular. But she loves Alexa, as she talks to her Hmm. I was poo-pooed when I pointed out that Alexa has to listen all the time...to everything.

I think as soon as the "super free wifi" everywhere picks up on your phone you are collecting cookies like mad. I mooched round town last week, didn't take my phone out of my bag. I'm still getting adverts for the shops I popped into on my tablet at home.

Tis part of life. We either embrace it or go off grid and live in the woods.

GlassHeart1 · 25/11/2018 19:02

Not a coincidence. I have just gone in to disable google location history on mine, in the small print they rave how useful it is to have it ON as it helps u to keep a track of where u have been etc.

Not for me, thanx!

yorkshirepud44 · 25/11/2018 19:54

This happened to me last week in Waterstones. Looked at this pouch storage thing for the side of the bed.

Later an ad appeared on Facebook for exactly the same thing but from amazon. I'd never googled it or seen it online anywhere.

HildaZelda · 25/11/2018 21:02

Your phone is indeed listening to you:

Babygrey7 · 25/11/2018 21:18

If you use google assistant on your phone, google is always listening to you.

George Orwell was wrong, Big Brother is NOT the government, Big Brother is Big Data, ever single bit of info that is kept on you (think how much a company would know about you if they knew your income, how you spend your money (all those loyalty cards tracking your purchasing pattern), your medical history, your online behaviour.... all tracked! Well, this is happening now....

CigarsofthePharoahs · 25/11/2018 21:24

Your phone is listening to you, it's a well known thing. I asked my sister which pocket money app she used for her children. The name was mentioned once.
My phone then advertised it at me for a week solid.
Google regularly asks me to rate and review places I have been.

EvaHarknessRose · 25/11/2018 21:42

My husband called me when he was staying in a hotel in Watford. Google immediately popped an advert onto my phone for Jurys Inn Watford or whatever hotel it was. I mean I guess it correlates the fact that our phones are usually in the same location or something?

Printerneedsink · 25/11/2018 21:51

Why do you need/want an app for pocket money?

autumnboys · 25/11/2018 21:54

I dreamt about a pair of kids Birkenstocks last night & then saw an ad for them on Instagram. I’m choosing to think that I saw the ad sometime yesterday. Grin

If you use google assistant on your phone, google is always listening to you.

The amount of time this crap comes up on here, it listens for keywords, if you think that its worth anyone's time and money to record everyone's movements and conversations just so they can make 0.3p from the off chance you may buy something.

Even if you try and use the economies of scale, the amount of data transfer and data to trawl through should make you realise how unrealistic it is.
