My cat has this injury. How to treat??

My cat came home with a big lump on his head 2 days ago with blood coming out a tiny hole. Now it looks like this photo ove attached. How should I treat it? He's been licking his paw and frantically rubbing the area for about half and hour now.

You should have taken him to be seen by now.

I hope he's ok.

LiveatCityHall · 24/11/2018 23:12

See if you can get your vet to refer you to an animal physiotherapist. They'd be able to treat the wound physically and without pain, whilst your vet could treat any infection with antibiotics.

princesstiasmum · 24/11/2018 23:13

Poor thing, why have you not taken him to the vets,it will cost you more in the long run if it gets infected and if its a bite they usually do

Lots of salt water OP

ProfessorMoody · 24/11/2018 23:17

Jesus fucking christ, some people shouldn't be allowed animals. If I knew who you were, I'd be reporting you right now.

Firstbornunicorn · 24/11/2018 23:19

I don't know if this happens everywhere, but here the OOH vet would ask a few questions about your pet's breathing, eating, drinking and toileting. If all that's normal, they'd tell you to bring it in when they open.
It seems if they think the cat will survive the night, they tend not to want to attend the call out.
OP, I do think it looks nasty, but I think first thing in the morning is your best bet.

minkies11 · 24/11/2018 23:20

And as for your gut instinct knowing when 'things are wrong' - I'm suprised he's still alive. You obviously don't have a clue. I truly hope he finds somewhere else to live.

ilovesooty · 24/11/2018 23:23

Poor cat. He should have been seen by the vet before now.

Dragone · 24/11/2018 23:28

Well the keyboard warriors are out in full force tonight.

Thank you for the constructive comments. In terms of diy cleaning of the wound, we have tried that up until now but as it hasn't improved I will take him to the vets in the morning. I don't want to mess about with it anymore. I wasn't sure if I was overreacting by considering going to the vet, it's so stressful for him, but you've confirmed my thoughts on it.

ProfessorMoody · 24/11/2018 23:31

Keyboard warriors? What a joke. The majority of us are just normal pet owners who wouldn't be this fucking cruel to an animal.

Wolfiefan · 24/11/2018 23:31

Really? The wound looks like that and you would consider not taking the cat to a vet at all?
You’re the one in the wrong. Letting a cat suffer instead of getting the poor bloody thing to a vet.

Bellabonkers · 24/11/2018 23:36

Ok I'm too angry to just do nothing. Is there anyway this can be reported to mumsnet HQ and maybe passed on to the RSPCA?
I've got my doubts this cold as ice woman will take the cat to the vet.
Any suggestions anyone?

ProfessorMoody · 24/11/2018 23:37

I doubt they'd be able to do anything, but it's worth reporting I guess.

CatAndMice · 24/11/2018 23:38

I can guarantee that whatever she ends up doing, if she bothers to return, it’ll be with a breezy 'well, the vet wasn’t concerned AT ALL and said I did right to leave the cat so long to see what happened'... Hmm

Bellabonkers · 24/11/2018 23:39

I just thought in terms of animal welfare. I'm just hoping we have shamed her enough into actually going.

GimmeGimmeHellYeah · 24/11/2018 23:43

That poor bloody cat.

I'm guessing you have no insurance?

BollocksToBrexit · 24/11/2018 23:45

Do you have any clorhexidine in? That's what our vet says to use on our cats and dogs when they're injured.

PickAChew · 24/11/2018 23:47

Would you watch and wait with a lesion that big and deep on yourself? Can you get someone round to sleeping child sit?

Crookedcolours · 24/11/2018 23:55

Looks nasty Sad

Bellabonkers · 24/11/2018 23:58

Ok I've reported it in terms of animal welfare. Guess it's all that can be done.
Feel so bad for that poor cat

mummymayhem18 · 25/11/2018 00:03

What a stupid bloody question. Do you think he needs the vet,any idiot can look at that photo and see that it needs a trip to the vets. You should have taken your cat as soon as you noticed it. You say you have kids in bed and can't get to the vets but you mention a DH so one of you could go. You mention other reasons well if one of them is you can't afford to go then you shouldn't have pets in the first place. Disgraceful, makes me so angry. Poor cat with a cruel imbecilic owner. Shame on you. Stop wasting time stuck to your iPad or phone and get down the bloody vets!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/11/2018 00:07

That wound looks sloughy which could indicate underlying necrosis.

Compare it to Vinorossos cat ear which has been drained -its pink , granulating and has good tissue borders.

I'd guess your cat will need surgery to debride and 'freshen' the wound.

minkies11 · 25/11/2018 00:07

I think it's already been done.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/11/2018 00:20

If you use warm salted water (boil the water then cool) and use it to soften the outer crust , you might be able to draw some pus.
Don't squeeze , its very near his eye and ear , you don;t want to risk pushing the pus in there.

If he had the lump 2 days ago , was he bitten before then?

empmalswa · 25/11/2018 00:24

That is horrendous.

Don't be calling people keyboard warriors for stating the bloody obvious.

You should rehome your poor cat once it's better, clearly you don't have the capacity to look after it.

What a bloody shame Sad
