Christmas Tree and decorations up already? Please tell me why

Out and about the last 2 evenings I've noticed a few Christmas trees already up and decorated. We've not even had Advent Sunday yet!

With a DS with a December birthday we always put the tree up in the middle of the month after his birthday. In any case, any earlier and the novelty will have worn off for me by the 25th.

Interested to hear from mumsnetters who have their tree already decorated. Thank you.

I don't know why it bothers you what others do in their houses?

Mine go up next weekend and is it's the only weekend my DH is home other than 22/23. It's a bugger as we have cats but I like doing it with my DH

MaMisled · 24/11/2018 21:40

Because lots of people love Christmas and want to extend the joyous atmosphere as far as possible either side of it. When DC were young our decorations went up around 25th November.

ChristmasArmadillo · 24/11/2018 21:43

Because I love Christmas (in fact it’s my birthday), I have several small children who have been waiting and asking daily for weeks, and if I waited til mid-December I wouldn’t be home to see it! We visit family from mid-Dec to early-Jan.

We put ours up today. It us only a tree inside so no-one else will see. I enjoy putting it up and having it up. I normally say from 1st Dec but we are away next weekend and today is my birthday so thought why not?

CelticPromise · 24/11/2018 21:56

I don't really care what other people do but it does seem that more people are putting them up VERY early this year (I would def say November is very early!).Ours will go up on the 9th but only because we are away the weekend after, 9th feels too early for me but 21st too late. They usually stay up til 12th night or thereabouts.

WickedGoodDoge · 24/11/2018 22:02

I usually put ours up in mid December but this year am yielding to DD pressure and doing it on the first. In theory, though, now that Thanksgiving is over, IMO we’re in Christmas season so I could have put them up yesterday guilt free. Grin

PersonaNonGarter · 24/11/2018 22:04

Not really dictated by shops, advent Sunday is 2nd December.

Yes, and it is not advent yet. Confused

Stephisaur · 24/11/2018 22:12

I don’t, but it will be up within the next week.

Expecting our first child the week before Christmas so trying to be as organised as possible. Christmas is my favourite time of year so I’d be really sad if I didn’t get chance to decorate the house!

Usually it gets done the first weekend of December anyway. Everything then comes down on twelfth night.

iwantasofa · 24/11/2018 22:13

Unfortunately we have to spend Christmas holidays abroad in a fairly non-christmassy part of the world so if the decs and tree don't go up early they won't be worth putting up at all.

Bobbywashere · 24/11/2018 22:23

Not this again! OP you know fine well with your post that you are hoping to attract all the miserable, judgemental, trouser-hoisting bores that will sneer at anyone enjoying the festivities and doing things different! (Gasp! Horror!)

So what if people like to celebrate Christmas early? Good on them for finding happiness and joy where they can...I would rather spend time in THEIR company than most of the picky little sneers on this thread!

WinterSpiceOnIce · 24/11/2018 22:30

I feel quite sorry for the kids.... they will be wound up for weeks with 'excitement '

Schools start with all the glittery crap around now too.....spend 4 weeks winding the poor sods up with 'Xmas Xmas xmas' then let them go a few days before

What an anti climax it must be for them Sad

WinterSpiceOnIce · 24/11/2018 22:31

Anyway op, mine goes up when we are ready, varies every year depending who is home

DevonshireCreamTea · 24/11/2018 22:38

I put mine up today. I love Christmas. My house is fully decced out it takes half a day to do and I'm busy every weekend now till the new year. I usually put them up first weekend of December but have plans This year.

Cranky17 · 24/11/2018 22:44

Honestly don’t, feel sorry for kids who parents don’t put their tree up for ages.
My mum would only let us put the tree up around 10 days before Christmas, I remember begging her to let me put it up, and by the time we were allowed it was all abit disappointing. She also keeps her tree up for the 12 days of Christmas.
So mine now goes up on 1st weekend of December and comes down either New Year’s Day of before.
I feel her judgement

RedPandaMama · 24/11/2018 22:47

I'm in the process of moving house but they will be going up the day after we move in - 2nd December. Next year they'll be up last weekend of November.

Reason is it's my house and I can do whatever I want with it! I absolutely LOVE Christmas, it's my favourite time of year, my 'happy place' and I want to enjoy it as much as possible.

DaphneBroonsHandbag · 24/11/2018 23:05

Not all schools do this, mine doesn't. The trees and decorations go up a week before the end of term. We practice carols and of course the nativity before this but there's not a lot that can be done about it as a lot of parents 'expect' to see their child in the nativity don't they? Of course children are "let go" a few days before Christmas, it's the end of term 🙄

EnidButton · 24/11/2018 23:07

Twatty Had a similar year and I was feeling quite 'can't be arsed' about it all but actually, having read your post, I'm wondering if really throwing myself into it might be better. You've inspired me.

So I might be joining the early decorators after all.

FourFoxCakes · 24/11/2018 23:11

It’s only an anti-climax for them if you havena crap Christmas at home Winter.

It’s totally within your control whether it’s an anti-climax or not.

BestIsWest · 24/11/2018 23:14

Ongoing battle between me and DH. He would like to put them up this week. I prefer to wait until about 2weeks before Christmas.

In recent years I cba to argue so they will go up next weekend.

They stay up until 6Jan though.

ProfessorMoody · 24/11/2018 23:14

Why would it be an anti-climax? Putting a tree up early doesn't make Christmas Day any different.

StylishMummy · 24/11/2018 23:15

Mine go up last weekend in November and come down 27th December. I associate Christmas with love, warmth and general good feeling, so this extends throughout December. I don't care what anyone else thinks as it makes me and my family happy

Funkyferret · 24/11/2018 23:42

I don't mind what people do or why. We go for a week-10 days before Christmas Day and keep up over New Year. Suits us. Just my circles, but the ones who put up in November are the ones on social media on Boxing Day with posts like "back to normal, phew", "thank god it's all over for another year", etc, with pics of an immaculate, undecorated living room. Maybe we just enjoy ourselves too much on Christmas Day but it would kill me to get up and do all that work and have a status update by 8am on Boxing Day!

Crookedcolours · 24/11/2018 23:45

Well I have because I'm working next weekend and between that and cubs camp I wouldn't have been able to spend the day doing it with my kids like I did today otherwise

Momasita · 24/11/2018 23:48

Winter... My kids are wound up with excitement now and we have no sniff of Xmas here. How can you know I will be getting pestered for weeks to put them up.

Many people get panicky and claustrophobic when it's this dark and focusing on Xmas, fairy lights etc gets them through it.

Momasita · 24/11/2018 23:50

Funky Grin😂😂😂😂😂

I'm miss havisham here I love leaving party debris out for a while.... Lingers on...
