Christmas Tree and decorations up already? Please tell me why

Out and about the last 2 evenings I've noticed a few Christmas trees already up and decorated. We've not even had Advent Sunday yet!

With a DS with a December birthday we always put the tree up in the middle of the month after his birthday. In any case, any earlier and the novelty will have worn off for me by the 25th.

Interested to hear from mumsnetters who have their tree already decorated. Thank you.

I love fairy lights so I like seeing those now it's dark and cold. Not so much the huge outside ones but little twinkly lights inside houses as you go by are cosy looking. Maybe that's why they've started early, to feel cosy.

I think I used to be a bit judgey knickers about it but no idea why, miserable sod. 😁 I couldn't care less now, so long as people are happy.

ProfessorMoody · 24/11/2018 19:30

My tree is half up, assembled and lights. If I don't do it this weekend, it won't get done as I'm busy every weekend with plans, guests, DS' various hobbies, work, writing and research.

It doesn't affect anyone else, so I really don't care what people think.

I like Christmas and i like decorations so i put them up 1st december to have a long time to enjoy it.

Mines up simply because I love Christmas, for me Christmas isn't one day it's a whole month. My children love the lights and to be honest so do I , when my tree is up it feels so much more homely, warm, even exciting. I really really enjoy this time of year; the manic shopping and ticking things of lists etc. Wrapping things up and just seeing the joy on children's faces when you see anything with Father Christmas on. I'm 25 now and I hope I still feel this way torwards Christmas in another 25 years x

theboxofdelights · 24/11/2018 19:40

Mine aren’t up yet but have been some years. No one else’s business really is it but if DH happened to be going away/missing Christmas at home we would try to get them up for a family lunch even if was mid November.

I like them up by advent Sunday - I work long hours and enjoy seeing my tree(s), even if it is only for three weekends plus Xmas.

Windgate · 24/11/2018 19:45

DM used to put tree and decs up Christmas Eve and down Boxing Day!
DH has a mid December birthday so we do tree the day after and take it down before 6th January.

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 24/11/2018 19:45

I really love Christmas and don't get bored of them so like the longer time with the house looking twinkly.

Helpmeltb · 24/11/2018 19:48

We normally put them up the first weekend in December but we've put them up early this year. Dd1 is having spinal surgery this week and I didn't want her to miss out on helping decorate the tree.

HolyMountain · 24/11/2018 19:50

I love twinkly lights and have them up all year all around the house (subtle of course)

I love seeing glowy Christmas trees through the windows when I walk home.

Momasita · 24/11/2018 20:40

Please explain to me why you give a shit op and how it affects you. You already have one explanation from burp and rustle.

Personally I don't have my Dec's up yet because I'm the type to sometimes leave them up well into January... But I totally get why people do and especially the light, dark thing...

What I don't understand is what bday and Dec's have to do with each other. One lady said her Dec's have to come down boxing day as that's when her dh bday is 🙄. I can't fathom a grown man insisting on this!! Who cares.

anitagreen · 24/11/2018 21:02

@Helpmeltb good luck x

madnessIsay · 24/11/2018 21:07

I find it weird when people take them down very early. Isn’t is the point to enjoy them over the school holidays & new year? I was brought up to take them down around 7th Jan. Also how to real trees last for 6 weeks of up now?

southnownorth · 24/11/2018 21:09

Ours is up because I like Christmas and I wanted to. Simple as that really. If you don't like it then tough! Glad it annoys some people.

They will stay up till January as well. Not come down on Boxing day.

NashvilleQueen · 24/11/2018 21:13

I will wait til 1 December but I don’t mind others doing it now. Decorating my home for Christmas is the thing I look forward to most of all. If I was on desert island discs my luxury item would be my Christmas tree.

Wishiwascrafty · 24/11/2018 21:17

Personal preference surely. The same reason some are up into the new year.

We’re putting ours up tomorrow. My husband and I are working alternate weekends between now and Christmas. We want a chilled family day with mulled wine, Xmas songs and treats for the kids.

Bluntness100 · 24/11/2018 21:22

I have tall plants, approx six foot or so, with fairy lights wrapped round, in many corners of my house, so I get the cosy twinkly light thing throughout the year. As such rhe Xmas decorations go up a couple of weeks before Xmas, I can't imagine having them up for a month before hand.

But if it makes some folk happy then fair play, do what you want.

For me though, fairy lights aren't just for Xmas 😁

GreyGardens88 · 24/11/2018 21:22

what's more boring than putting up decs early is all the smug g* constantly moaning saying they couldn't possibly put their decs up earlier than 2 mins before xmas

Rockbird · 24/11/2018 21:24

Ours will go up next week at the dds' request. Have seen a good few up already though. Am tempted to switch on the outside lights as they're the best part of it all.

PersonaNonGarter · 24/11/2018 21:28

I don’t really like it - it seems can’t waitish and also like we’re being dictated to be shops. The festive season is basically the retail season.

The same people seem to want their decorations down by Boxing Day. The ‘Twelth Night’ stuff is lost, fair enough, but again it is all a bit impatient and consumerist.

theboxofdelights · 24/11/2018 21:30

Not really dictated by shops, advent Sunday is 2nd December.

dalmatianmad · 24/11/2018 21:31

Our tree goes up somewhere around the 18th Dec and comes down on the 27th.
I love Christmas but hate the commercial side of it all.
I'm working all of Christmas this year 🙄

user1483644229 · 24/11/2018 21:35

Mine went up last weekend. I am definitely not a ‘look at me’ person at all. I just really enjoy the build up to Xmas. I had planned to do it first weekend of December then my husband suggested earlier and so that for me was the green light to just do it. Some of the decorations are from my mum who is on the other side of the world and so I feel like a part of her is with me when I see them.

twattymctwatterson · 24/11/2018 21:38

Mine isn't up yet but will be in the next few days. I've had a truly shite year with a fairly serious bereavement, I've got a five year old and it'll make us happy. I don't think I'm "zany" and don't really care what anyone else thinks about it. The people I know who already have it up all have young kids and love Christmas
