other people, that have gone down like a lead balloon? You always get threads about what Mumsnetters have received that they didn't appreciate, but what about when the boot's on the other foot?

I bought my dad a telescope. A proper hugely expensive professional one. I thought he'd like it as he's always going on about the moon etc. He's never used it.

My mum plants a tonne of bulbs in pots each year and heaves them about all over the garden, first to scrub them, then to fill them, then moving them from the rabbit-proof area to where she wants to place them. She always strains herself and moans about how hard work it is so I bought her a Handimoova (a sort of trolley for moving these things as effortlessly as possible) and she hated it on sight. She's abandoned it in her store room. Ditto the gorgeous hanging basket brackets I bought her as she was upset about the rabbits ruining her containers.

My brother I bought a murder mystery gangster game and some props when he moved into his new house, thinking he might like to have a murder mystery night as his housewarming. No, was the answer to that.

My sister, when she was about 17 I bought her a Hippity Hop (designed for teens/playful adults, it wasn't a kids' one) and she never had it out of the box. With hindsight I see that it wasn't really 'her'.

I bought a friend of mine a book I had enjoyed and she wasn't backwards about coming forwards telling me she didn't like reading. Another time she freaked out when I gave her some fancy chocolates and our mutual best friend a cushion. She would have preferred a similar cushion apparently.

What about you lot?

Saw an off-beat film once (I won't name it because then the person will know what I'm referring to). Thought X would love this. Bought it for them. DVD still in cellophane.

I bought my friend a set of wine glasses, green ones, that I thought were very much her taste. It was for her birthday, a few months before her wedding. She opened them and said, in a very quiet, sad voice "Oh, but we've put wine glasses on our wedding list...".

They drink a lot of wine and I've been to several parties at their house since. The wine glasses have never made an appearance Blush

I got my Df Angel fish in a tank.
He seemed to really enjoy other people pets.

Five years of him with his bemused, puzzled face before the shitty fish died Angry

Not so much a present but I bought my Dsis a birthday card with a funny cartoon of a pole dancing lady as she had taken up pole dancing as a hobby.

Well I thought it was a funny lighthearted cartoon but she obviously did not Sad

We’d been given free tickets to a major golf competition. We went and DP loved it. Went on and on about it. For his birthday I bought him 6 golf lessons. They’ve never been booked.

A blue and silver bracelet for someone who likes jewellery and blue and silver. Her face told me she hated it. Embarrassing!
Also a present I bought for someone and as I handed it over and she unwrap it, another person who was with us said she’d be offended if someone gave her it and what a rubbish present it was (it was totally non offensive). I kind of shrugged it off but I was a bit upset as I’d put a lot of thought and effort into it. The receiver still has it on display years later but I was never sure if it was because she liked it or she felt bad that I was probably obviously hurt by the other persons comment while said person seemed oblivious.
