I'm a mess, I'm dreading standing up in front of everyone, I've written some but it only lasts 5 mins. Everyone will just be thinking how stupid I am.

How can I fix this? I need to email it to the tech person at my uni by 8am and give the presentation in the afternoon.

What should I do? I'm like a rabbit in headlights, I just freeze when I look at the material now, it's pure anxiety.

Quick spider diagram jot down what you want to say why you saying it what this means for your audience how you want to do it what gonna stop you what can help how long will it take what are the benefits
Make sure you got it all covered in your presentation
Also ask for audience participation it makes it more interesting for them and takes up time

Good luck

Ruth2009 · 22/11/2018 20:42

What's your topic?
And try not to panic, it's never as bad as you think it's going to be

Thisisit777 · 22/11/2018 20:42

Topic? We can try to help

Onceuponatime21 · 22/11/2018 20:42

What's the brief?

samlovesdilys · 22/11/2018 20:46

Spider diagram is great start, then sort into order, keep PP brief, only a few words/images and write out your own notes (I usually write a full script then condense into key points on record cards just as prompts). Don't try to be fancy, just go slowly, clearly and keep going back to key question to show relevance. You will be fab!

Onceuponatime21 · 22/11/2018 20:46

Also, don't forget, your slides should only have brief headings. So as long as you know broadly what you want to say on each slide, you actually have until tomorrow afternoon to work out the detail of exactly what you want to say. So, do broad headings and slides tonight. Then bed at reasonable time, and work on detailed content tomorrow 👍

Academic and theatre teacher here, my top tips:
Do a ‘Wonder Woman’ pose in the loo beforehand (seriously, there’s even a TED talk about this!) take some deep breaths (in 4, hold 5, out 6)

Have a bottle of water in front of you when presenting, take a sip whenever you start to get flustered.

We often over estimate how much material can be got across verbally, if you speak slowly, and aim for a clear ‘story’ (see PP on relevance for audience) you probably have 10 mins.

Practice out loud several times if possible.

I’m off to a conference this weekend presenting my finished PhD research and I’m still nervous! Nearly everyone is when public speaking, to some extent. You can still do this - good luck!

StupidArse · 22/11/2018 20:52

I've done the spider diagram though, and I don't have anything more to say Sad or I sort of do, but it gets really complex really quickly and too big.

It's on the human cost of the Syrian political situation. I've focused on the work Doctors Without Borders are doing there.

I don't think we can ask for audience to participate? They assessors will be firing questions at us all at the end in one group, we are 6 students. So we have an hour of presentations, then an hour of questions and discussions.

I'm first to go and so nervous. I feel like I've done it all wrong.

I mistakenly read that as Do a Wonder Woman poo in the loo beforehand and was surprised there was a TED talk about this Grin which did make me laugh at this otherwise very stressful time!

Thisisit777 · 22/11/2018 20:56

You can do it. Honestly. Deep breaths! Just aim for a pass - that’s enough!

Make it simple: break it down to bare bones. Then thow in some points of critical thought.

thesandwich · 22/11/2018 20:59

A picture says so much. Can you use some photos?
What do you want your audience to think, feel, and do?
Google Amy cuddy Ted talks. Good luck.

Starlighting888 · 22/11/2018 21:02

I know it sounds silly but practice saying it out loud in front of the mirror!

You’re feel very silly in front of the mirror but much more confident tomorrow.

celticmissey · 22/11/2018 21:02

Can you type up one A4 page with a few interesting facts about your topic and give each person a handout. That kills a few minutes and invite questions at the end - tell them if you do not know an answer you will come back to them

SofiaAmes · 22/11/2018 21:05

I am a huge proponent of saying it out loud ahead of time. Also if you aren't going to have a Powerpoint (here in the usa it seems even 2nd graders do their presentations with Powerpoints) then do good old fashioned flashcards with just a topic sentence written on each one so that if you blank out in the middle you have something to prompt you.

StupidArse · 22/11/2018 21:07

I've practised and I'm fairly comfortable with what I've written but it only lasts 5 minutes, and I just keep going blank trying to think of more without winding up talking about the political history of the country. Which my classmate is focusing on, so I can't focus on the political aspect.

StupidArse · 22/11/2018 21:09

If it's 5 minutes instead of 10 will I most probably be failed though?

OP posts:
Owllwo · 22/11/2018 21:11

We don’t know your assessment criteria but I guess it would be like answering 5 out of 10 questions in an exam.

Owllwo · 22/11/2018 21:12

So just say something, anything, to lengthen it.

StupidArse · 22/11/2018 21:13

Yeah. I'm fucked then aren't I? There's no way I can manage a pass.

OP posts:
OhioOhioOhio · 22/11/2018 21:15

Yes. Some more questions that your discussion prompts?

holidaylady · 22/11/2018 21:19

Hi I feel your panic.
Can you swap with anyone else so you don't have to go first?

That could help with the nerves.

Ok so you have half done that's great! Also, when nervous most people speed up their talking. So consciously try to slow down. And practice tonight!

So you need one more thing to add in to fill the next 5 minutes. How about the impact on women in particular? Or children?
Or, medical care, or the availability of food.

Can you include the cost to those working for DWB? Stress, anxiety etc? Obvs not the focus but gets you another slide and two minutes.

Speak slowly, gives you another minute. Facts and figures on a slide, population, birth rates, mortality rates. Another minute. A slide of a particularly hard hitting scene. 30 seconds of silence to let the photo sink in.

And there's your 10 mins.

StupidArse · 22/11/2018 21:22

I don't want to upset anyone else's plans by asking to swap, think we're all quite nervous! It's my own stupid fault I'm in this situation.

I've timed myself twice now and it's 5 minutes so I have to come up with more somehow. It's so frustrating because it's my fucking confidence - I go to write or say something and immediately start thinking no that's rubbish and then freeze.

I really enjoy seminars and tutorials and not afraid of speaking and discussing then but this has me stumped Sad

Its difficult to advise without knowing what you've covered already.
Either narrow the focus down further eg add in some case studies. Or a section on your area's links to Syria eg fundraising groups; refugees; campaigning, etc. Or how your audience can get involved.
Or broaden the focus out to the UN, UNHCR.
