I'm a mess, I'm dreading standing up in front of everyone, I've written some but it only lasts 5 mins. Everyone will just be thinking how stupid I am.

How can I fix this? I need to email it to the tech person at my uni by 8am and give the presentation in the afternoon.

What should I do? I'm like a rabbit in headlights, I just freeze when I look at the material now, it's pure anxiety.

I would get some clips of Doctors Without Borders staff speaking about their experiences in Syria- there are loads of compelling clips to online- download and use iMovie or similar to cut into a 60 second film. Embed in your PowerPoint. Start your film with this.

Explain that you have sifted through hours of footage to choose these extracts- that you selected these fleeting moments, because they offer a 60 second analysis of the human cost of the Syrian conflict, more compellingly, with more relevance and insight, than any quantative data, any amount of geopolitical academic postulating. That you begin with that footage, because the true human cost of the conflict in Syria is best understood by the men and women counting that human cost, by the number of bodies that they lay their hands on, on any given day.

Then I would launch into stats:

“And the number of human bodies killed, maimed and left with life changing injuries is- “

Etc etc - whack horrifying stats

Then move into your main analysis etc.

I have 6 slides at the moment, so if I make them up to 10 and then expand the discussion on each slide does that sond ok?

We were told we should have about 10 or 12 slides and not to have too many.

Could you add more by going into more details about the impact of Doctors Without Borders work? Their outcomes or funding? Before focusing on what they do in Syria? Their ethos or how they started? Think about Why, what, how, when, who, how - have you covered all those?

YeOldeTrout · 22/11/2018 21:25

Ah come on ,this isn't so tough.
I know a Syrian refugee.
I am thinking you could find a video of someone being interviewed about their experience & put 2 minutes of that video into your slides, with a summary comment about how these are Real people, like anyone else, and it's easy to lose sight of that.
I hate public speaking, but sounds like 6 of you will get grilled together so not so bad.

StupidArse · 22/11/2018 21:25

Not allowed to use film clips. I think they got wise to students using it to fill out time!

StupidArse · 22/11/2018 21:26

Thank you, these ideas are very good.

There's the pic of that poor toddler on the Turkish beach.
Provoked global response. But didn't last :(

Yemen is going to be far worse at this rate.

Owllwo · 22/11/2018 21:26

But reading it out loud on your own will be word perfect, quick and no eye contact.

Add in some pauses, maybe a bit of a stalled intro due to nerves and then some time looking up and around the room and you’ll be on for 7 mins.

Chuck in a couple more sentences, maybe add a question to the end to give a longer pause for the audience to consider it and you’re up to 9.

Thank you and clapping (if no clapping then maybe add a cough) takes 1.

Sorted!

TheSheepofWallSt · 22/11/2018 21:26

@stupidarse

So get pictures of doctors and find their testimony. Read it over the top.
You can fill at least a minute with that.

Starlighting888 · 22/11/2018 21:27

Can you add in a quiz or relate the topic to an example and talk through it?

StupidArse · 22/11/2018 21:29

Thank you and clapping (if no clapping then maybe add a cough) takes 1.

Gonna definitely have coughing not clapping, every second counts!

Too many slides is distracting that's why they have limited you.

Tell them what you are you to the them.
Tell them it (your points)
Then tell them what you told them.

That's basically how to do a presentation.

This uni course is preparing you well for work! As having to do presentations is totally normal. And pretty much everyone hates doing it.

Practice really does make perfect.

You sound very negative and down on yourself.

Honestly, you need to believe in yourself and pretend you are confident.

Good luck!

DMCWelshCakes · 22/11/2018 21:33

Definitely put in a case study. A narrative will help to engage and hook in the listener.

Look up storytelling in presentations - it'll give you some more info on what I mean.

Take your time with your delivery. Low and slow is the way to go with your voice.

Use pauses for emphasis. If you ask them to consider something, give them time to do that.

(I've spent the last 2 days on a course about exactly this sort of thing & I'm a great public speaker.)

Above all, keep calm & remember to breathe. You've got this.

Wallywobbles · 22/11/2018 21:38

Ask the audience some questions. Or get them to imagine a scenario.

We do this thing with the kids....imagine you're lying in bed. It's dark and you can hear these pop pop noises. But they don't really stop. You realize they're shooting. We come in and say get dressed. Grab what you need. Coats and comfortable shoes. Spare clothes. Soap. Brush. Only what you can carry. You have 2 mins. What else do you take? Everyone in the car with some food, money, jewelry. Where do we go? What happens when we've no petrol left...

It'll draw people in to your talk. It's very powerful.

Ceecee18 · 22/11/2018 21:51

I would aim for 8 slides OP. 10 in 10 minutes is quite a lot and you'll likely end up going over. 8 slides, 1 minute talking per slide when domes at home will work out around 10 minutes in front of people and have to think a bit more about what you're saying.

I'd definitely look for a couple of case studies or a slide on statistics.

YeOldeTrout · 22/11/2018 21:59

The others will probably run over time & everyone will be grateful that OP didn't.

metronome1 · 22/11/2018 22:00

What you don't want to do is read the slides. I'd start with an overview of the presentation (use a spider chart for this it looks good) then go into an activity that involves the audience. Getting them to think about the topic and give you the information. You can take up loads of times doing something like handing out big sheets of paper and getting each table to bullet point ideas, think of part of your topic this would work for. Then collect in and discuss briefly and relate it to the rest of your PowerPoint. Make statements/questions like "research shows x and y, which I find shocking, what will it take? Then pause for a couple of seconds for audience reflection. That will easily take up 10 minutes.

BanjoStarz · 22/11/2018 22:12

I think everyone’s covered everything I could.

I just wanted to add, as a uni presentation, they DONT want you to fail, it doesn’t look good on them! I’m assuming it’s positive marking rather than negative marking so they will be actively looking for reasons to give you marks.

So take a deep breath, do your best and it will be fine - you sound like you’ve made a genuine effort to engage with the material and considered it well.

Good luck for tomorrow!

mizu · 22/11/2018 22:16

No advice, sorry but I would have loved to see it. We have been teaching Syrian refugees for a couple of years in our language department and I speak a bit of Arabic and I hear bits and pieces of stories.

StupidArse · 22/11/2018 23:29

Well I've done a case study and I'm up another good minute and a half! Thank you Mumsnet!

OP posts:
Bacciferous · 22/11/2018 23:51

Could you talk about the Syrian medical professionals? How many people have been lost, killed or fled and the repercussions. Linking that to the work of Doctors without Boarders?

stiffstink · 22/11/2018 23:57

I do an "overview" slide at the beginning of what I'm going to talk about and this will add another 20 seconds or so with the "and then we will move on to X."

It helps both me and the audience to see how it will flow.

Hairytangerine · 23/11/2018 00:11

How did it go op?

ThisIsWhatItSoundsLike · 23/11/2018 07:31

Good. Luck op you'll smash it

OzzyMadBat · 23/11/2018 09:16

Hope it went well OP. I think Mumsnet is fantastic for brainstorming ideas, threads like these restore my faith.
