Buying dc theatre tickets as a gift

How does it work? You give them a pair of tickets and they choose who to bring? If they bring a friend does the friend pay for their ticket?

Dd has asked for tickets for a show but they only have expensive tickets left, I can't see a friend willing to pay a huge amount.

I'd expect it to be a pair of tickets (so that someone can go with them without having to pay) or a ticket for you and a ticket for the recipient

Be careful because some shows, such as Hamilton, you would have to go as the card holder who bought the tickets.
