So dh and myself have been veggie for 20+ years. Went into one of our usual places and he ordered a Mozzarella, Sun dried tomato panini, came with salad and coleslaw. Nothing that we hadn't ordered before. It arrived, and he began eating it end in , until he came to the chicken ! They had given him what he ordered plus a very generous helping of chicken. We obviously complained and they said the order came with chicken. Errr no look down the menu and their in the vegetarian section is what he ordered. We got a refund and a £10 gift voucher. But fellow vegetarians how would you feel about given/:eating meat after all that time ?

I was veggie for almost 15 years and if happened from time to time - usually a mixed up order. As long as the staff were apologetic and it was clear it was a genuine mix up rather than outright slapdashness it never hugely bothered me. It sounds like you got an apology? Accidentally eating a bite or two of meat rarely isn’t contributing to whatever reason you are vegetarian for, and it isn’t harmful. But I do acknowledge I’m pretty pragmatic about most stuff.

I was vegetarian for nearly 40 years, and on the few occasions that I accidentally got a mouthful of meat or fish, I felt revolted and very cross. But there's nothing to be done about it after the event, at least you got an apology (and the voucher, but you might not want to eat there again!).

Oh I would hate this. Sympathies!

I lived in China for a while, and often found meat in dishes that were meant to be vegetarian. Horrible.

I know someone this happened to, after being lifelong veggie. They started eating meat full time (!)

If it happened to me I would feel sick. If it happened to dh he would make himself sick. It’s very annoying with something like a panini where you can’t see what’s in it clearly.

Thanks for your opinions, yes he was pretty revolted and was feeling queasy. They asked if they could make another, but his appetite had gone ! Tbh I thought he would be talking of nothing else this evening , but he seems resigned to now have meat rolling around in his system. It's taught us that even if you have ordered something it will pay to dissect it to check nothing has been put in it ! It also made me angry on the behalf of people that are allergic to something and are given things that have the potential to kill.

This happened to a colleague of mine. He and I were away on business. He ordered the vegetarian lasagne; I ordered the beef lasagne . The waiter gave me his lasagne and him my lasagne. We had both eaten a few mouthfuls when I noticed that my lasagne was full of carrots and courgettes but distinctly lacking in beef. My colleague was happily munching away, thinking he was eating quorn or similar. He spent the rest of the evening throwing up. He said himself it was probably psychosomatic but he was really ill. He hadn't eaten meat for 20 years until that point. He was very gracious to the restaurant staff and we weren't charged for his meal but it was still a shitty thing to happen despite it being a total accident.
