I have an ipad air 2 and managed to kill the battery by using an extension cord that you would normally use for a washing machine or other huge machine. I used that cord over and over for a couple of months and eventually the battery wouldn't load anymore.

I managed to get a totally new ipad air 2 via Apple's battery service for 99€. Since the batteries are glued inside the ipads, Apple simply gives you a new tablet (or iphone).

However, it doesn't work with very old gadgets; you probably couldn't do this with the first ipad model.

If he’s not computer minded I’d go for a iPad. So easy to set up, no security worries, all the apps in the same place, and if you get stuck, you can make a free appointment with apple, and they will teach you how to use it.

IPad but I also have MacBook & IPhone
For me they are easy to use and last
We have an 8yo 'antique' iPad that has been passed down to the youngest (who wants to do very little with it), an almost 3yo iPad and a 4yo iPad mini

Some people are very anti Apple, yes they are expensive but I pay not to have problems and so far I seem to get what I paid for.
