DP just been made redundant 😭

My DP was made redundant yesterday. He won't receive a payout due to lack of service. I'm due to give birth in two weeks so there's no point in looking for work (I've been a sahm so no maternity pay). Thankfully we have savings (less than £16k) which we can use.

Our area has just changed to a universal credit area. I had a quick look online and it states it will take 5 weeks to receive the first payment. Is it really an absolute nightmare?

Yes and in reality it will be six weeks minimum before you receive any payment. I would cancel all non essential bills immediately. Keep internet access on one device - this is a mandatory requirement to receive anything. Make a list of all food, toiletries and cleaning stuff. Start doing exact food lists. Now is not a time to think of career and just take any work. H ended up doing tarmac work in a terrible winter once just to keep as afloat and not require us to claim anything. Good luck and try to stay calm.

Temp staff jobs over Christmas will be around - delivery driver type stuff. Get your DH out looking fir any casual work ASAP. And as a PP says make a plan for food, budget etc.

PP is right, lots and lots of seasonal work about. Get him to call agencies this morning

GaryBaldbiscuit · 21/11/2018 10:21

post office often looking for staff, well they used to be, over christmas

ring your council, they may well be understanding and offer help, point you in the right direction.
wont he get job seekers?

GaryBaldbiscuit · 21/11/2018 10:22

you dont need to go on universal credit, something wil turn up
what was his job? what can he do?

So sorry OP especially at this time of year Flowers

Thanks all. The timing definitely sucks. We are fortunate that we both have qualifications which should result in a decent paying job, and there is work available in our fields, hopefully DP will be able to find something soon (he'll happily do anything to keep money rolling in), it's just annoying with the timing because if I wasn't pregnant both of us could be looking for work (our plan was for me to return to work when this baby is 1).

We're quite good with meal planning etc, I'm a firm believer in the mythical mn chicken Grin and have a lot of herbs/grains etc

Not sure if you want to hear this at the moment OP but each time DH or I have been made redundant it's always in the long run turned out to be a blessing. I was heartbroken after being let go from a particular job and company I loved, thought my life was over, but it turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to me.

All the best to you and DH. You'll get through this I promise Flowers
