DS has asked for a chocolate birthday cake. On a budget so has got to be a supermarket one, Asda, Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons are the closest. Nice, moist and chocolatey- any recommendations? Thanks

A Colin.

The Sainsbury version of Colin!

Chocolate cakes are very easy to make and taste far nicer than supermarket ones. Would you make one if I gave you an easy all-in-one recipe?

Betty Crocker devils food cake box mix.
I’ve never found a premade supermarket one that wasn’t too dry.

I think the Lidl deluxe chocolate cake tastes the closest to a homemade cake. It's the texture. All chocolate cakes are chocolatey, but the texture of the deluxe cake is like how I've made chocolate cakes in the past.

Actually, that Betty Crocker one is moist and very chocolatey. I always bake my own cakes, but that is an excellent one.

My favourite chocolate cake recipe is this Mary Berry recipe

I just make chocolate fudge icing rather than ganache for it though.

Morrisons' Fresh chocolate cake from the chiller cabinet - judging by the speed it gets eaten in this house, it's thumbs up all round

Thanks for your help. I suggested a Colin but he’s an older teen with a sophisticated palette Grin. I’ll check out Lidl. Would love to make one but to my shame I don’t even have suitable cake tins and limited skill so would rather not ruin his birthday!

There’s a Mary Berry one for Asda which is lovely. It’s otibsbky called something like “indulgent chocolate cake”. I had it for my birthday, a couple of weeks ago.

Lidl deluxe one or the party celebration cake a pp posted a pic of! Or Morrison's equivalent celebration cake is good

greendale17 · 21/11/2018 08:52

Sainsbury’s caterpillar cake or Asda’s Mary Berry cake

Lucky44 · 23/11/2018 19:10

Went for the Lidl cake, nice and chocolatey but not as moist as I had hoped, lovely tho and value for money. DS liked it so that’s all that matters really . Thanks again for the suggestions

co-op one is quite nice.

There's an m and s chocolate birthday cake which is delicious...it round and has shaved chocolate curl things stuck to the sides if that helps...think it was £8. It's amazing.

By the way, I have no idea why everyone loves the Colin the caterpillar cake or similar type ones...they look fun but taste so average to me.
