Do you get your boss a Christmas present?

Would you/do you?

I would really like to get mine something. Even though as his PA, I'll be writing and getting him to 'sign off' my own Christmas card Grin

My situation is tricky as I don't work closely with my boss. I work in a small office (5 staff) and I'm the manager. They get me gifts and I buy for them obviously, but I don't get my manager anything as I only see him once or twice a month, if that.

If you work together daily then I would probably get them something.

isseywithcats · 20/11/2018 21:34

No there are four managers where i work and im not buying someone on about 8/9 times my salary a christmas present, the area im in there are three of us and we buy each other a small present each

ScreamingValenta · 20/11/2018 21:34

Not individually. I'll put some money into the collection and sign the card.

feathermucker · 20/11/2018 21:34

Hell no

Ffsnosexallowed · 20/11/2018 21:36

No I won't be getting her anything. I'll be getting my direct reports a bottle of fizz reach, she left each of us a chocolate tree decoration which we had to pick up from her office last year....

StopTheSundayBlues · 20/11/2018 21:37

My boss is a millionaire so I guess the thought will just have to count Grin

I can think of a lot of things to buy with a lot of meaning behind them. That I know he would like purely because of the thoughtfulness.

I'm a PA so it's a very demanding and 1 on 1 role in general

No, we just so secret Santa. This year I happen to have my deputy manager though.

CherLooksYoungerThanMe · 20/11/2018 21:50

No, no present unless I get her in the secret Santa. Which I hope I don't, she'd be really difficult to buy for.

Reythelastjedi · 20/11/2018 21:53

No, I'm going to but for my team but that's six people already to buy for. Boss earns plenty, she'll get a card.

Meet0nTheIedge · 20/11/2018 21:55

No, we don't do presents at work at all (small business, ww all report directly to the owner).

BoomTish · 20/11/2018 21:59

Yes. But we’re very close, and also buy each other birthday presents, gifts from holidays, and random bits throughout the year if we see something the other will like. She’s very generous to me in a lot of ways, and I appreciate her so much.

My department director and I also exchange gifts. Usually something small like a bottle of wine, or a fancy hand cream etc.

I manage a team and get each of them a small gift too- maybe a box of chocolates and a little lip balm set or whatever. They usually give me chocolates and wine. We’re a close team, so happily exchange gifts- I don’t think anyone feels it’s expected, or feels they’re giving a gift to someone they dislike. I hope not, anyway.

Pyjamaface · 20/11/2018 22:00

No. It has been made very clear that I, and the other people that do the same job as me, are the very bottom of the pile despite the fact that things literally would not happen without us so sod him

DoveSecret · 20/11/2018 22:08

This is my 1st Christmas there and i dont know if the staff buy for her. Ill buy a nice candle from TK maxx -one i like - and ill see at the end if term if gifts arrive on her desk.

Otherwise it’ll be mine.

AlpacaPicnic · 20/11/2018 22:13

My immediate manager, yes I do. We are good friends and often socialise outside of work and have even holidayed together. So we do exchange birthday and Christmas gifts.

The bosses above her, no, but we don't work together in the same location. We are a sort of satellite office and are quite remote. I may send a card from 'the office' but I doubt it would be missed if I don't get round to it.

GrumpyOldMare · 20/11/2018 22:15

I like and respect him,but no,never. We're workmates not friends. It would feel really weird.

Blankiefan · 20/11/2018 22:29

No. This had just come up as I've changed team and they are all about the presents. The boss of the team gets everyone something and then within the team it seems that all the managers buy for their direct reports. I have 2 direct reports so will have to do it or they will feel left out.

It's a total nonsense. I've never done it before in the same business or elsewhere. It's a faff and who needs more stuff?! I don't buy most friends things let alone work people!! It's not the money just the needlessness that annoys me.

PowerOfInquiry · 20/11/2018 22:33

Er, no, the thought wouldn't even cross my mind.

And I definitely wouldn't buy my millionaire boss a thoughtful present if I was his PA 😮. I'd also skip writing myself a card from him. So, I'd save myself headspace, £, and time.

mycatplotsdeath · 20/11/2018 22:43

No because she is horrible bully who literally just ebbs away at your confidence and ability until you are just broken

PowerOfInquiry · 20/11/2018 22:46

mycat, 💐. Can you make plans to try to leave?

Yes I always did

Loved the pair of bastards 💕

CherryPavlova · 20/11/2018 23:28

My husbands PAs buy him presents for birthday and Christmas. Nothing huge just something thoughtful. He’s always really pleased - but he is quite close to them.

My team do a secret Santa that I join in so we don’t buy everybody presents.
