Help me find some new music?

duhast · 20/11/2018 19:52

I'm a bit stuck in a musical rut in that I only listen to my old favourites. I need some new (or new to me!) artists.

My favourites:
Levellers
New Model Army
Rammstein
Depeche Mode
Therapy?
Linkin Park
Seth Lakeman
Foo Fighters
The Smiths
Led Zeppelin
80s/90s indie

Obviously there's others but those get most play.

I strongly dislike the likes of Coldplay or Ed Sheeran, I find it very middle of the road.

Help? Smile

Rise Against

tierraJ · 20/11/2018 19:56

I love chase n status - drum n bass makes me happy.

Also trance - eg Tiesto is my favourite.

HippyChickMama · 20/11/2018 19:57

I like most of the music on your list, not exactly new but have you heard Frank Turner? Royal Blood? I'm just as bad as you though, currently listening to a 20 year old Far album!

tierraJ · 20/11/2018 19:58

My current favourite track is Tom Walker - Leave a Light On.

tierraJ · 20/11/2018 20:00

Also try Wilkinson - Half Light & Afterglow are good

Helmlover · 20/11/2018 20:03

The pixies, the cure, nirvana, joy division, new order, arctic monkeys, arcade fire, placebo, Radiohead, muse, blossoms- I reckon some of these bands maybe up your street?

duhast · 20/11/2018 20:14

@HippyChickMama I have never any of your suggestions! I've got Spotify open so will start with Frank Turner Smile

@Helmlover most of your suggestions I'm very familiar with.

For some reason I have never got on with Muse even though I met Matt Bellamy on holiday and thought he was a jolly nice chap!

I like the one Blossoms song I've heard (reminds me of 90s indie) so will delver further.

@tierraJ that Tom Walker song is one I like despite myself I think.

@duhast ooh, I hope you like it! 'I still believe' is the best Frank Turner song (in my opinion anyway).

fantasmasgoria1 · 20/11/2018 20:39

I like many of the bands that you have listed. Depeche Mode are my ultimate favourites. I also really like muse! Perhaps give muse a listen!

fantasmasgoria1 · 20/11/2018 20:39

I also second placebo!

donajimena · 20/11/2018 20:40

May I tempt you with some Northern Soul? Its a completely different genre. I was very much the indie/rock/grunge whatever you call it. Someone introduced me to Northern Soul a few years ago and it changed my life as in I have so many new places to go...

Recent-ish stuff you might like!

Wolf Alice
Alt-J
Royal Blood
Isaac Gracie
Yeasayer
Death Cab for Cutie
Gaz Coombes solo stuff is fab.. better (and quite different) to Supergrass

Mamaogden · 20/11/2018 21:05

It might be a bit out of your zone, but Grace Jones is quite good.

duhast · 20/11/2018 21:12

Some familiar (and not listened to in ages) stuff here thanks - means can go back to some old faves I've not listened to in years.

Also some great stuff to explore.

Where does a person start with Northern Soul?

Gerry cinnamon

hooveringhamabeads · 20/11/2018 21:23

Do you have Apple Music or Spotify? If you add all your favourite albums to the library it comes up with suggestions of things you may like based on your tastes - I’ve come across some great music I’d never have known about otherwise that way.

duhast · 20/11/2018 22:00

I'm Spotifying the hell out of these suggestions!
Thank you all.

Try listening to Tom Ravenscroft's shows on 6 music. He plays all sorts of weird and wonderful stuff. Also, on Spotify look at a festival playlist - Green Man is a good one and you'll hear all sorts of good, current music.

Witchofzog · 20/11/2018 22:22

A band called Mona. They are a bit rocky a bit bluesy. Their album Soldier On is amazing (skip to the second track when you first listen)
Also daughtry, and 3 doors down are fantastic too. Please feedback if you can!! I would love to know what you think Smile

Glitteryfrog · 20/11/2018 22:32

Bring me the horizon
Nine inch nails
Architects
Basement
Pins

I've got back into listening to the radio 1 rock show which is broadening my listening.
