What was the speed limit on this road? Two speed signs!

I was driving on a totally ordinary road, one lane one way and one the other. There was a speed limit sign facing me on the left side saying 30, and parallel but on the right side of the road, also facing me, saying 40.

Why? Was this a mistake? What was the speed limit? Btw I'm not a confident or experienced driver.

Depends on the road really but likelihood is it’s 40 on one side, 30 on the other and one has been turned.

I've been on that road recently! Can't remember where. Think I decided the 40 was for a parallel road

I’d have gone with 30. The sign on the other side could have just got turned around.

If its 40 there should have been repeater signs

Sounds odd. Maybe it’s at a point where the speed limit changes from 30 to 40 and one of the signs was spun round?

No idea about the actual speed limit based on the detail given, but I’d probably err on the side of caution and drive at 30mph until / unless i saw a 40mph repeater sign further along the road.

I don't know without seeing the road, but I would have played it safe and driven at 30 till I saw another speed limit sign (or no signs and a built up area which would indicate 30).

Was there any street lights? It's usually 30mph if there are street lights.

I suspect someone had turned the sign round; I’d drive at the lower limit too.

Agree that I’d have stuck to 30 unless I saw a further sign.

Were you entering more of a built up area hence the 30, while the 40 (turned round either by accident or some idiots ) was leaving the built up area.

Yes, that must be it. Someone maybe turned a sign around. How boring must your life be to do that for a laugh?
