I'm not the only one who HATES the Boots Xmas ad, am I?

pretzelflipzaretheanswer · 20/11/2018 11:40

Because it drives me insane!

It doesn't make any sense, for one! So the daughter she keeps stealing her mum's perfume, wears make up at what? 17?! And her mum marches her back off upstairs to take it off and she does it Hmm and gets a slight eye roll? Ha! Then she sees her mum singing, wearing a bit of lipgloss and suddenly she's her hero!! So she decides to buy her another lipgloss for Christmas?!

However, the 'story' isn't the most irritating thing about this advert. It's the god awful music! .....

"If there's somebody spoilin ma fun. She's me mum". Arghhhhh!!!! Angry

I noticed it because I was in Hitchin and muttering about how ridiculous it was that they had a christmas tree and lights so bloody early and then I saw they were filming.

PuppyMonkey · 21/11/2018 22:20

Am I the only person in the country never to have seen this advert? And I watch bloody loads of telly. GrinConfused

I can’t be arsed to search for it on YouTube, so I’ll just have anticipated my first viewing.

I don’t know where Hitchin is either. But I know Boots is headquartered in Nottingham and that’s definitely not the north, but people would definitely say “me mum” or “me mam.”

Birrdy · 21/11/2018 22:21

I hate it. It's so twee and insincere. The northern accent, (in this context, trying to making it "quirky"), the ridiculous concept, everything about it. It's something I have to mute as it makes me irrationally angry.

Valasca · 21/11/2018 22:24

@GreenTeacup - now that you’ve written it, I can completely see it. But if an advert needs explaining, it’s shite.

Reposting Green’s explanation

“I thought it was playing on how the teen respects her mum. She starts by trying to do her hair and can’t get it right and then she has her take off her lipstick which is so outdated - daughter basically saying you don’t understand and so boring cause your just old Mum stuck in a past decade.

Then sees her Mum in a gorgeous lipstick and suddenly Mum isn’t so out of date after all, realises she also likes the latest lippy and they connect under the Christmas tree.”

EdWinchester · 21/11/2018 22:24

My son is at Uni of Nottingham and he definitely considers it the north in terms of accents/vernacular. The local students think his home counties accent is terribly posh, which he loathes.

MarcieBluebell · 21/11/2018 22:29

I just don't understand it.

Make up company tells someone old enough not to buy makeup.

But buy the same makeup a woman already has.

ShatnersBassoon · 21/11/2018 22:43

They'd be calling themselves Boowutts in the ad if they were wanting an authentically East Midlands sound, not wringing out the 'u' for all it's worth Grin

WeShouldOpenABar · 21/11/2018 22:44

I hardly ever see ads but dh switched over to live telly as I was going to bed last night and I had the misfortune to see this dross. I literally left the room in a full on rant about how angry I was that something that crap existed as dh looked on confused 😕

girlywhirly · 21/11/2018 22:46

I saw the crew setting up for the filming, funnily it was a really warm day and all the passers by were in short sleeves.

Hitchin is in North Herts, just off the A1, around 30 miles north of London.

DuckofDoom · 21/11/2018 23:05

Oh thank God, I thought it was just me!

Why hasn’t her mum ever mentioned being in a choir? Does the daughter not wonder where mum keeps running off to when it’s rehearsal time?

Does the daughter just happen to stroll by at the time her mum is singing? And pay enough notice to the choir to actually spot her mum in there?

Why buy a lipstick? She obviously already has a red lipstick because we saw her wearing it when she was singing. She doesn’t need another one does she?

I don’t get it at all

Davros · 21/11/2018 23:18

Hate it. Vom.
There's another ad with a mum and teen DD on a holiday where the teen starts off stroppy and then they bond. Single mums with teen DDs must be the new must-have demographic.

PuppyMonkey · 22/11/2018 10:29

Shatners - and it would be "dead code" at Christmas brrrrrrrrr. Grin

Ed, your son and his not at all posh I'm sure Home Counties accent must indeed stand out compared to locallers, but he is definitely in the East Midlands and not The North if that helps at all. Wink

Anyway, update - I STILL haven't caught this bloody advert. Confused

crochetmonkey74 · 22/11/2018 11:50

I agree- I put off watching it having heard how great it was and touching about Mums as I lost my Mum 4 years ago and miss her dreadfully- when I saw it accidentally I couldn't believe it was what was being discussed!
Shame as normally the Boots ads are good- I loved last years Sisters one

Patroclus · 22/11/2018 13:32

Im really really fed up of this competition to create the biggest family themed tearjerker every year now, with awful twee music. Cynical shite. Sainsburys using World War One to shift units was the worst for me. Would they use the holocaust in the same way?

ComeOnComeOnComeOnGetThroughIt · 22/11/2018 15:29

It's cheesy, irritating, and confusing. The music is execrable and the accent is fake.
Still made me cry though. Do they put some kind of secret subliminal trigger in these awful ads that make menopausal women sob? It's like a Pavlov's dogs response.

derxa · 22/11/2018 15:53

"me mum" Angry

Loopytiles · 22/11/2018 17:01

Bet it was created and produced by southern, posh men in an ad agency and approved by similar men at Boots.

LostontheWestway · 22/11/2018 17:56

I was born and bred in Nottingham and I've never ever said "me mum" or "me mam" it's not The North. It's The Midlands.

MarklahMarklah · 22/11/2018 18:03

I thought the girl was about 20 so was baffled as to why she had to remove the lipstick. Horrible advert, horrible song.

SapphireSeptember · 22/11/2018 18:08

I go through Hitchin on the train down to London, it's not a northern town! (Used to be the Peterborough to King's Cross service, now it goes through St Pancras and out again to Horsham. The first few times I panicked I was on the wrong train! It's eventually going to go to Brighton.) I dunno what I'm on about how, I clearly need chocolate.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 22/11/2018 18:11

her mates are also standing behind the mum when she is made to go back upstairs to take her make-up off. Cringe. What are they, 10?

DancerOnIce · 22/11/2018 18:25

It makes me so angry Angry I think my reaction to this advert is what is going to eventually make me go into labour

Bowchicawowow · 22/11/2018 18:29

It’s terrible.

AutumnCrow · 22/11/2018 18:37

I think my reaction to this advert is what is going to eventually make me go into labour

Reasons why I love MN encapsulated ^^ Flowers

Jbck · 22/11/2018 19:04

Why on earth did Robbie let them use it!
