I'm not the only one who HATES the Boots Xmas ad, am I?

Because it drives me insane!

It doesn't make any sense, for one! So the daughter she keeps stealing her mum's perfume, wears make up at what? 17?! And her mum marches her back off upstairs to take it off and she does it Hmm and gets a slight eye roll? Ha! Then she sees her mum singing, wearing a bit of lipgloss and suddenly she's her hero!! So she decides to buy her another lipgloss for Christmas?!

However, the 'story' isn't the most irritating thing about this advert. It's the god awful music! .....

"If there's somebody spoilin ma fun. She's me mum". Arghhhhh!!!! Angry

The song is desperate, it make me want to throw things at the telly. Who sat round in an ad agency and thought that "she's me mum" would sound appealing in that song? Confused

ShatnersBassoon · 20/11/2018 18:43

A lot of Christmas adverts are good (funny, heartwarming, nostalgic...), so don't give Boots the excuse of 'they're all rubbish' for producing this lame effort!

HHH3 · 20/11/2018 18:45

@StuntBottom 👋

@EdWinchester it was

theluckiest · 20/11/2018 18:45

I don't understand it either - but what I don't get is why the teen is surprised to see her mum singing in the choir. Has her mum never mentioned it? Has the girl never wondered? Has the mum been sneaking out to do some stealth singing every Tuesday?

Baffling.

Don't get Kevin the carrot either. Why a carrot? Why Kevin? Is it supposed to be a little bit wacky? It's just dumb..(and parsnip-ist)

Flashingbeacon · 20/11/2018 18:47

I thought it was just me.

  1. the daughter is old enough to wear lipstick
  2. she would just stick it in her pocket and put it on on the bus
  3. anyone i ever met who sings in a choir talks about it so why is the daughter surprised
  4. the mum is singing in a massive choir, nice enough but not brave or strong
  5. to me the first time it look like the daughter gave her a half used lipstick!
  6. there’s only the 2 of them in the house, is it more abouy a single mum and her daughter?
  7. she doesn’t mention her singing until Christmas morning, weird
  8. unless it’s Christmas Eve in which case let her wear the bloody lipstick.

This add bothers me a lot.

SylviaAndSidney · 20/11/2018 18:49

It is dire.

I actually say “me mum” (northerner) but it sounds ridiculous sang like that. If I was singing it I’d sing “she’s my mum”, the advert made every northerner in this house look at the tv and cringe.
Sounds so false. And we didn’t ‘get’ the advert either.

ladydickisathingapparently · 20/11/2018 18:50

Just looked it up out of curiosity. Hated it!

Thought I recognised Waterstones in Hitchin Smile

KingPrawnBalls · 20/11/2018 18:53

Agree, it's bloody annoying!

Gimmeesugar · 20/11/2018 20:18

I just watched it again. It’s properly bad. So fake Northern and makes no sense

Got us all talking though

jimloop · 20/11/2018 20:25

Makes me cringe!

ladydickisathingapparently · 20/11/2018 21:48

Just seen it for the second time. WTF with the accent? It just doesn’t sound genuine to my untrained ear. Shades of Tess Daley and her “lassssstingggggg satisfacccccctiionnnnn....”

pretzelflipzaretheanswer · 21/11/2018 19:13

lady, you're lucky you've only endured it twice. It seems to be running every other advert at the moment.

OP posts:
EnidButton · 21/11/2018 19:17

I've seen two tiny bits of it including 'she's me mum' and it made me cringe hard but now I have to watch it all or I can't moan about it...hang on

EnidButton · 21/11/2018 19:22

Ok it's slightly less annoying when I've watched it as a whole but still rubbish.

Teenager's lipstick looks great, wtf is Me Mum telling her to wipe it off? She must be about 16-17 at least. Daughter will be on aibu in a few years time.

The singer sounds like someone 'doing' a Northern accent or a Northerner who's been told to ramp it up a bit for relatability. Like Peter Kay and Paddy McGuinness. (I'm Northern btw. I can lay it on thick or flatten it out, depending)

EnidButton · 21/11/2018 19:25

And anyway I think they'll find the correct term is "Our Mam" Wink

TitsalinaBumSquash · 21/11/2018 19:30

Meh, I like it way more than the shite JL come out with year after year.

rockingthelook · 21/11/2018 19:42

It's ok, better than the awful John Lewis Elton promotion, can't stand it, bring back Buster the dog!

Sparklingbrook · 21/11/2018 19:42

At least Elton is singing his own song.

EnidButton · 21/11/2018 20:30

It's not his song Sparkling, it's your song.

I'll get Me coat

SapphireSeptember · 21/11/2018 21:48

I can imagine my mum telling me to take off my make up at age 17. Hmm Oh, wait, no I can't, cos she never did, even though I was Gothed up to the eyebrows half the time (even if I was going to school.) She did buy make up for me, and encouraged me though. Grin

Anyway, I've avoided Christmas adverts so far, long may it continue! (The joys of not owning a TV and watching YouTube with Adblock plus! Grin )

EnidButton · 21/11/2018 21:58

It's the only one I've seen apart from the Elton John Tour promotion.

I do love Boots, a lot, but they aren't very good at adverts. Recent one with the dancers was alright. Trouble with Christmas is they all try to compete with John Lewis so they try to make them tear jerkers and most of them fail. They should go the opposite way and inject some fun and honour back into Xmas ads.

EnidButton · 21/11/2018 21:58

Jesus. *humour

BumbleyBum · 21/11/2018 22:05

Aha! I live very close to Hitchin! I didn’t click it was Hitchin in the ad.. will have to watch it again Shock

user1471465525 · 21/11/2018 22:06

Hate it with a capital H

BumbleyBum · 21/11/2018 22:09

How on earth did you eagle eyed pps spot that it was in Hitchin.. I’d have never noticed that in a million years!
