Visiting hospital

I’ve been asked to visit an ex colleague’s son who has been moved to my local city hospital suffering from pneumonia. He is now stable and hopefully starting to recover after a scary time but is I think expected to be in for a little while and she and her husband are not due to visit for a few days hence sending me in as the local familiar face. What on earth do I take with me? He is early twenties and has been quite poorly, what would be useful for him to have in hospital? Extra jogging bottoms etc, drinks, snack food, magazines?

Just go in and ask him if there's anything he needs. Assuming this is a hospital like most I've visited where you can pick up magazines, sweets and other stuff on site?

Do you think he’d tell me though? I’ve already text Mum to ask but don’t know him that well, just thought I’d turn up with some nice bits in case he doesn’t feel comfortable with me buying his deodorant etc. But then I suppose when you’re ill it’s a bit different.
