Any vets out there?

Hi,
I think my dog has mange, had sore patch for about 3-4 days and been itching more often. I had tried a bit of coconut oil in case it was just a random sore patch but now I think I may know what it is I will obviously be taking her to vets in the morning. My question is, I'm 8 weeks pregnant, I've been stroking her and all sorts, I was hoping someone could reassure me I've not endangered the baby. I've had two miscarriages so may be a little more cautious but just read about it being contagious and am panicking a bit.

You and baby will be absolutely fine. Probably not mange- they are usually massively itchy if it is.

Does she not have regular flea/worm treatment? Advocate for example would protect against mange.

fruitandbarley · 19/11/2018 22:09

Yes she does but don't think it was advocate make, I'll check. I'm hoping it's not, but if it does turn out to be mange will it be dangerous for me?

The mange will not be dangerous for you ( advocate won’t protect, is unlikely to be mange anyway but if it is, it would not be dangerous for you)

Again, unlikely to be manage but does need seeing. Tell the vet you're pregnant, make sure they give you some gloves for handling/administering any steroid tablets or creams etc. that they may prescribe.

Fairtatas - all the literature about Advocate would suggest it does protect against mange.

Advocate had a license for sarcoptic and demodectic mange but many veterinary dermatologists don’t think it is effective against these two mites.

tinstar · 20/11/2018 19:05

Oh that's worrying. We get a lot of urban foxes in our garden and I thought the Advocate was protecting our dogs from mange.

Smileyeyes68 · 20/11/2018 19:12

Simparica tablets are probably the most effective licenced treatment for sarcoptic or demodectic mites, Bravecto and Credelio tablets are likely to be effective but are unlicenced. Itching and patch of dermatitis could be for a number of reasons so definitely best to seek veterinary attention.

Relax OP - your baby is at NO risk Smile
Congratulations on your pregnancy, hope the itch resolves soon
