I have a question about Silent movies.

I wonder if anyone can answer this question, When silent films were hand coloured (like the roof top cape scene in Phantom of the opera or The Impossible Voyage) was every print sent out also hand coloured, or was this only done for selected big cinemas?

check out the Handschiegl colour process, a lot of it was automated.

Thank you ifailed it seems this is the exact process I was thinking of as it was used for the phantoms rooftop scene.

It would seem they would only have to trace one negative, then use that as a mask to dye the others.
