a child's winter coat which isn't bulky

Ds3 hast a perfectly good winter coat - decent brand, very warm. It's massively bulky (ski jacket type) though and he hates it. I made him wear it this morning - it was minus 4 when he left the house with a powdering of icing sugar snow. It'll warm up a bit through the day but not much above freezing (we're abroad, within Europe).

They have a lovely enormous garden at primary school complete with trees which they're allowed - boarderline encouraged - to climb as well as other play equipment and natural features to clamber around.

DS is upset because he says he can't climb in his coat. He wants to wear his soft shell jacket all winter. He is almost always up a tree...

So far I'm saying tough, it's too cold, you wear your ski jacket. So he does, because he's 7...

I'm curious though, is there such thing as a non bulky, genuinely properly warm children's coat?

Any suggestions? Perhaps for next year as I imagine that such a thing might be expensive.

Age 8-9 / 134-140cm height

What about the 3 in 1 type ones? So a zip out fleece inside and a waterproof top layer.
