Would like some advice, no judgey comments please.

My mum died 5 years ago when I was 20, and in the same year I left the home to go to university. Over these past 5 years my dad has let the house decline- firstly through grief but then everything has piled up and it'll be a big job to sort. He keeps on top of day to day cleaning (washing, ironing, washing up, hoovering etc) but other jobs haven't been touched in 5 years. I know it's such a big job and feel sorry for my dad as he works over 50 hours a week so I've offered to take a few weeks off just to help declutter, give a fresh lick of paint. My dad's quite put out by this and I think he's got offended. Thing is it's getting beyond a joke now, and I'm worried if anyone does an inspection he'll be evicted. How do I broach this without hurting my dad's feelings?
