Heavy period - how much is too much?

I haven’t had periods for a long time as been on various pills and stuff to prevent exactly this happening .

I’m bleeding very heavily , using the largest body form pads and still soaking through them plus pyjamas , bedding etc. Woke up at 6am, changed clothes etc and took tranexamic acid - didn’t wake up again til 1pm in same situation .

Have since taken two cocodamol and anti sickness as still excruciatingly sore , but bleeding seems non stop - have changed pad twice since 1pm, plus twice overnight and I think seven times yesterday (when period started).

I’m already taking over the counter iron (well woman capsules) . Have diagnosis of PCOS and endometriosis unfortunately , have been admitted several times with period pain.

Is it worth ringing 111, or should I just put up with it? Very tired and dizzy/lightheaded but well enough to type and get to bathroom so obviously not an emergency as such . Just exhausted !

call 111
there is a wide variation of 'normal' but feeling unwell from blood loss is not.

Yewnicorn · 18/11/2018 14:42

It’s about what is normal for you - if this isn’t normal then ring GP in the morning, definitely.
I personally wouldn’t call 111 but if it would make you feel better, definitely do so Smile

If you've changed pads twice in an hour and a half that sounds like very heavy bleeding. I'd ring 111 and see what they day.

Definitely phone 111, this doesn’t sound right and I have very heavy periods and anaemia.

howmuchistooheavy · 18/11/2018 14:46

It is fairly normal for me to be honest I think , just seems somewhat worse than normal but I’ve blacked out before and can remember periods where I’ve spent 3 days in bed or so. It’s just the feeling ill that’s awful , I could seriously go back to bed again .

This would be something that I would consider medicating albeit not an emergency.

divafever99 · 18/11/2018 14:48

I remember a similar thread to this, and the advice then was if you are going through a pad an hour your need to seek medical attention.

Screaminginsidemeagain · 18/11/2018 15:06

If you have been prescribed Tranexamic Acid are you taking it as you should.
I take 1000mg(2pills) three or four times a day depending on how heavy that day is.
Are you drinking enough to replace the fluids?

I would go back to the GP.
I’ve always been very heavy- soak though a super is tampon in an hour type heavy, and had to get up overnight(10-6) to change everything and that’s with a tampon and super pad.
I use a moon cup now so I can actually say how much I am loosing. I have pcos too and they have just found polyps again and possibly or endo.
Go back to the GP.
It sucks

Yeah two tablets three times a day .. it’s the cyklo f stuff from boots. It finally started making a difference a couple of hours ago , thankfully - still heavy but not so bad as this morning !! Will keep up with the iron supplements . I’ve got gynae on the third Dec anyway so I’ll ask her then about options - I’ve already had a mirena , progestogen, mini pill, combined and implant . Mini pill worked well if I remember right .
