Can anyone give me some guidance?

I want to buy a present for someone who has recently taken up some sketching (supported by a textbook) and is enjoying it so far, but obviously is far from an expert so doesn't need superduper fancypants kit just yet.

What would be useful to have without being intimidating/unnecessary?

Budget c.£50.

Thank you!

A set of pencils from 9h to 9b, some graphite or charcoal pencils/sticks, a couple of putty rubbers, a good plastic eraser and a sharpener. A few pads of a3 paper. To really get their skills up pay for 6 weeks of life drawing classes and as an extra treat get them the book, Drawing on the right side of the brain by betty Edwards.

I like Seawhite sketch books (spiral, hardback), A4 or A3.
Good to take with you, and nice to keep and look back at.

A portfolio (case) to keep their creations in. A1 size.

Sea white sketch books in different sizes and some landscape, some portrait.
Little watercolour half pan set
Waterbrushes (they are brushes with water in the handle, so you don’t need a water pot )
Really fine brushes
A box/bag/storage device of some sort (I keep all my ‘travelling’ kit in an old sponge bag...so glamorous)
Water resistant ink pens for outlining

Oh, the possibilities are endless! You are a lovely pal

My most useful bit of kit is an old fashioned library date stamp...I put the date on each sketch so I can see how far I have come and it reminds me of the day.
In my case it makes me do a sketch a day as well!
