Potty training nightmare

DS is 3 in January. We haven't pushed potty training but have tried a couple of times to no avail.

This week he has declared he will no longer wear nappies and wants to wear underpants. So I've put him in pants. We had a good chat about it and he knows he needs to not go to the loo in them but instead use the potty or toilet. He has no fear of the potty or toilet but just doesn't seem to get it. I don't know what to do. He's not using the loo/ potty at all unless I practically force him when I know it's poo time. He's just wetting. The near suggestion of a nappy gets him upset. But we're going through clothes like I don't know what. It's also restricting where we can go. He isn't leaving puddles as his clothes are quite thick.

Any suggestions?

Pull ups or those pampers knickers that come in a red box. My just 3yo dd was dry for weeks had a few accidents and went into pull ups, she has been dry now for 2 weeks bar one accident so l am gonna give it one more week then back into knickers.

The pull ups have pictures on them though makes them more fun.

He won't wear pull ups, doesn't want anything but 'proper' pants. We've been using nappy pants for a bit so I think he just sees pull ups as the same.

Oh crap potty training. Totally naked from the waist down until he’s getting some on the potty, then loose fitting trousers without pants then pants too.
